Daniel Reis

Daniel Reis has worked in the IT industry for over 15 years, most of it for a multinational consultancy firm, implementing business applications for a variety of sectors, including telco, banking, and industry. He has been working with Odoo (formerly OpenERP) since 2010, is an active contributor to the Odoo Community Association projects, and has been a regular speaker at the OpenDays annual conference. He currently works at Securitas, a global security services company, where he introduced Python and Odoo into the applications portfolio.

Excellent content, worthless index

The content is an excellent introduction to Odoo 8 that covers many basic and intermediate topics for which answers can not easily be found elsewhere, so five stars for the content. However, the index is worthless, first because it is incomplete, and second because it is inaccurate, so zero stars for the index. Many of the terms I wished to look up in the index were not present, and the terms that were present in the index consistently referred to the wrong sections of the book. In order to find particular terms, I had to scan the table of contents, guess which section would be the most likely to contain the desired information, and then re-read that section. If the index was accurate and reasonably complete, this would be a five star review.

However, after several weeks, I find myself referring more often to the book than to Google, and believe the high quality of the content warrants revising my initial review from three to four stars, despite the index.

I would buy it again, but directly from the publisher and bundled with a searchable PDF for a few dollars more.

On an additional note, the front matter states that the eBook is available at a discount to purchasers of the physical book, but as of this review, multiple attempts to contact the publisher (Pakt Publishing) were not successful. If the eBook was available at a reasonable price point (and not another $23.99 for a searchable PDF) this would be a five star review.

Best Intro to Odoo Development to Date

I find it hard to believe that no one has reviewed this book yet.

This is by far the BEST book for new Odoo developers that exists to date, and I've bought every one that has come out so far. If you are already an experienced Python developer, this cuts through all the cruft and gets right to the point. The money that I spent on this book (I happened to get it right from PackIt Publishing for the PDF version) was worth more than everything I spent on all the other books... and yes, even $ paid subscription tutorial videos by other people.

It starts off with you writing a simple module, like most books, but addresses EVERY important area for writing a complete module, then goes into depth for each major area of what makes up your custom module and all the available and important options for using models, fields, views, domains, logic, security, etc... And it targets the latest Odoo Version 8.

There are some symantec errors, but very few, and it addresses an English speaking audience extremely well.

In the seemingly fresh frenzy to come out with material to sell (whether it be books or videos) for what is becoming the most popular open source ERP system in the world... for all other authors, publishers and editors out there writing and/or producing Odoo development material, don't bother if you cannot match or exceed the quality of content of this book. In my opinion, this book is now the measure to which all other material needs to be compared.

Daniel Reis really wrote a terrific book. This is one of the best books I've ever read about an application development environment completely new for me (as Odoo was some days ago). This book represented the guide I was looking for to learn about application development with Odoo.

- The book conveys new key concepts in clear and direct way to be easily and quickly catched and applied even for completely new Odoo developers.

- I was more than glad when realized that the book does not stop at just an introductory level of development in Odoo environment, but that it takes the reader to a higher level, boarding themes like for example application extension by using concepts like inheritance and other more elaborated topics, exposing them in very clear way too.

This book follows Packt books great tradition of teaching by reading-doing-explaining-"and seing inmediate results" as part of the reader’s learning process.

I got the book after its launching and I assure that the book’s worth its price.

Agree, Great Place to Begin

Well, hard to say that this is the 'best' book to begin with since this was my first. But I can assure you the it is a GREAT place to begin since it feels like an "Information Desk" where you can find where more information about a particular topic is. So if you are into Robotics or into Machine Learning or into ANN or GA, Cyborgs, or you just like AI but not sure what/who/where to begin? then this book will point you in the right direction. The recommendation he makes are so broad and targeted for practical and theoretical folks.

A very easy to read simplistic introduction to the field of Artificial Intelligence. The book covers a comprehensive variety of styles/approaches to artificial life and computational problem solving including optimization, data mining, agents,evolutionary system and so on. The content does not enter into particularly highly detailed examples (no maths/programming) of these principals, however the descriptions are thorough enough (in plain english) for any introductory readers, or those without prior knowledge to fully grasp the concepts being discussed.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of the overall field of Artificially Intelligence, or for someone looking to get an idea of whats out there before diving into more complicated books.

This book breaks down the active ingredients found in plants we might chose to use in a home remedy.
My personal opinion is that no herbalist can honestly consider themselves sufficient in quality to meet a need or qualify as an herbal practitioner without this book as their guide.
Granted, it isn't covering every plant chemical, or every plant known to mankind up to date, but it should provide enough information for practical purposes used in the traditional herbalist lair.
However, this book is one of the best guides for the aspiring student of pharmacy, organic chemist and nutritionist.
I believe this book to be a treasure for a clearer understanding in ethnobotany as well.
I would recommend this book to anyone seeking an insider clarity of phyto-chemicals.

Information is detailed, each alkaloid is given 2D formula, brief description of action on human or livestock and plant where it can be found. Also very good reference: by latin name of plant you can quickly find all alkaloid it can contain and it which parts (roots, berries, leaves).

Leland Ryken has collected essays and excerpts, long and short--nearly 500 pages' worth--all devoted (some more directly than others) to "thinking Christianly about literature." Contributors including J.R.R. Tolkien, Madeleine L'Engle, Flannery O'Connor, and T.S. Eliot discuss such topics as a Christian philosophy of literature, success and failure in current Christian fiction and poetry, realism, fantasy, and narrative. Perhaps the most common thread among these pieces is the understanding that Christian art "is by no means," as Ryken puts it, "always religious art." If you want to make a Christian work, advises Jacques Maritain, "then be Christian, and simply try to make a beautiful work." Also of particular interest is Clyde S. Ryken, who has previously explored the intersection between the literary and the spiritual in How to Read the Bible as Literature and The Discerning Reader, brings together Christian thinkers from a broad spectrum of time periods and literary disciplines. The collection opens with a section called "Christian Philosophy of Literature," which despite its dry title features memorable selections by luminaries such as Annie Dillard, C.S. Lewis and Francis Schaeffer. Other sections address issues such as imagination, beauty, teaching, realism, myth and fantasy, poetry, and narrative; with a collection of this size, it is surprising that the essays are of such consistently high quality. One wishes that all fiction editors at Christian publishing houses would read Richard Terrell's essay "Christian Fiction: Piety Is Not Enough," in which he identifies the problems inherent in creating "safe" fiction that must always be devoid of profanity, violence and sex. Other gems include Frederick Buechner's masterpiece "The Gospel as Fairy Tale," J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Consolation of the Happy Ending" and Madeleine L'Engle's "Is It Good Enough for Children?" Walker Percy and Flannery O'Connor offer strong autobiographical essays on being Christian novelists. Poetry is not neglected here, with essays by Luci Shaw, Wendell Berry and others testifying to the importance of poetry in the Christian experience. a spectrum of insights

Ryken's rich and at times overwhelming collection of essays, musings, and pithy apologetic pieces on beauty, imagination, Christian thought, narrative, and poetry is richly diverse and thought provoking.

In this 100,000 word+ tome we get glimpses of what led C. S. Lewis to write the Narnia chronicles, what Annie Dillard thinks of literature as an art object, and Tolkein's view of the important of a happy ending--as well as dozens of other forays into thought on literature, reading, and life.

I found the views varied and, for the most part, refreshingly insightful. I will admit though, that I skipped some of the chapters that were excruciatingly dense and didactic. They'd quite clearly been written not by narrative artists but by academics, and despite my best intentions, I just wasn't able to plow through them.

As long as you're willing to skip the parts that aren't of interest to you, this book is well-worth buying, reading, and savoring. Just don't expect every mouthful to be as tasty as the rest.

If you want to learn about the impact and legacy of Christian writers (good and bad, but mostly good), this is the place to start. Featuring writings from many of the famous authors themselves on writing, plus essays from other onlookers. A must read for all literature students and readers.

A Starting Place for Renewal

Art is a hard subject for Christian evangelicals to deal with. It seems to be outside the boundaries of our primary mission, to proclaim the gospel in the world and display and expand the kingdom of God. However, this book helpfully shows the important contributions Christian art can make to that mission.

In a series of essays, various professors contribute thouhtfully to our understanding of the role of art's various forms from a Christian perspective. These thoughtful meditations are important, because they force us to reexamine our preconceptions about the role of art and beauty.

Yes, the format can be hard to follow, as it seems a bit disjointed. My recommendation to you is this; Read each major essay slowly, taking time to pause and digest its implications. Think carefully about how the essay touches your experiences. Do NOT read two major chapters in a single reading or even a single day. Instead, approach it more as a devotional- each thought/essay is its own autonomous unit.

By this approach, I believe you will be able to more deeply enter into the meditations of the authors, which are all extremely helpful and very gospel-centered.

Take the time to read this excellent book, and allow it to shape your thoughts about using beauty and art to display the gospel to a sick and dying world.

textbook

This is my current contracts textbook. The explanations are concise but offer no clear definitions or rule statements. The cases are used to illustrate what the introductory marterial was attempting to explain to you but sometimes make it more confusing. It doesn't help that our professor doesn't really teach us the material either but that's not the text's fault. The Table of Contents really doesn't offer much information as a guide for outlining.

Dead Air

Wes Bryant is a talk show host in the small town of Clarion, Indiana. One day, a young girl named Jennifer calls his talk show and says she's held captive by some evil people. Wes decide to try to find her and uncovers a sinister secret society engaging in satanic ritual abuse.

Satanic ritual abuse was a popular moral panic in the 1980s and radio evangelist Bob Larson seems to be a self-proclaimed expert on the subject. This novel (ghost written by one of his staff) takes satanic rutial abuse very seriously. The book is a quick read and kept my interest but the whole story felt very silly and impossible to take seriously. The heroes often behaved very irrationally, which is always annoying. I also don't think I've ever seen so many typos in a book before. Read it only if you like me occasionally like to read really bad over-the-top Christian fiction. If I were to disregard all its flaws it would've got 3 stars for entertainment value.

Profile in Ghostwriting

This book is still in print because it is at least competent. I had the dubious pleasure of reading some of Dead Air in rough draft, and can say that Larson is incapable of writing a novel by himself. The book itself (and the ghostwriting controversy which ensued) precipitated two separate lawsuits, involving Muriel Olson and Lori Boespflug, who can fairly be said (especially, upon reviewing Larson's anemic later efforts) to be the substantive authors.
Protagonist Wes Bryant is Bob Larson, as he wants the world to see him. Ex-wife Polly appears to be first wife Kathy (whom Bob dumped unceremoniously after 23 years of marriage), and his new wife Laura (roughly 17 years Bob's junior) gradually became Annette. Boespflug was blunt in admitting that that was what Larson wanted, and for those in the know, it is painfully obvious.
In a 1993 World magazine expose of Larson, Boespflug told reporter Jay Grelen that she fabricated many of the colorful details of this "fiction based on fact" novel entirely from whole cloth. And given Larson's documented penchant for fabrication himself, this seems to be a veritable certainty.

Dead Air

I will say that although the contents do get graphic at times it is the only way to honestly portray the truth of this type of violent abuse. As I was reading Dead Air it was as if I were reading my own biography. In my life I have experienced just about everything Jennifer experienced and more.
The sequel Abaddon is full of the same riviting truth to this form of abuse. It is not until some years later that the after affects the victim suffers begin to surface. The contents of Dead Air is a reality, it is happening everyday I feel that this book is a wonderful tool to expose the truth. I have read all of Bob Larsons books including some of his early writings such as Babalyon Reborn, Rock, Straight Answers On The New Age and In the Name of Satan. Each and every one has been enlightening and educational. I would highly recommend Dead Air along with any of Bob Larsons books be it for pleasure reading or education. Although Dead Air may not be for the faint at heart it is a book that could open the eyes of the blind to the truth of a form of abuse that has been swept under the rug to long. Speaking as a survivor of Satanic Ritual Abuse Bob Larson has done an excellent Job of exposing the detestable activities that are preformed, and the effects it has on the victims without leaving anything to the imagination. I do not recall when I have read a novel that held my attention as Dead Air has done. Excellent Job!

Outstanding book on invasion ecology

This book is an up to date, thorough treatment on invasive ecology. It could be used to learn about invasive ecology or for a senior undergraduate and/or graduate class. The book is well organized and written. They have chosen to present many of the main issues in invasive ecology, comparing and contrasting different results in different areas (such as plants and animals). Their book builds on itself, so that as you continue to read, they remind the reader of examples already talked about in other parts of the book. This helps the reader to remember the concepts, and see different ideas from different points of view. They are not shy about the lack of evidence and research for some of the main hypotheses in this branch of ecology. At the end of each chapter, they present the reader with current papers on further complexity as well as companion papers. As a community college instructor and a PhD student, I found this book to be top quality. I hope there is a book so up to date, and well organized for me to teach invasive ecology from when I finish my degree.

Very well written, I thoroughly enjoy this book

It's very informative, backed up with plenty of facts. The concepts and theories really helped me in my field of invasives ecology. The only drawback I would say is that you need to have some kind of background in ecology or ecological concepts to thoroughly enjoy the chapters. I also bought another book to go with this one (not the same authors) and I much rather pick up this one and read it. I definetly recommend it to others, and it's a good price.
