One patent book that is worth the money

There are too many books about patents these days that are written by consultants (including lawyers-turned-consultants). Most of them are fluff that try to promote some new buzzword, like "intellectual capital management." There's nothing wrong with having a broad and managerial view about intellectual property, but unfortunately most such books are filled with useless consultant-style diagrams and vague notions such as that intellectual asset managers' duties include "sharing best practices", "leadership", and of course "career development for IAMs."

In sharp contrast, this is one of the few books to get into the nuts and bolts of what best patent practices actually are. It's also considerably cheaper than books available from the major legal publishers.

The explanation is clear, and addressed to non-lawyers. A major benefit is that it has a very global view, discussing patent regimes of several major countries, not just the US. In my experience, most tech companies are very naive about such matters. The author also has a lot of practical experience and insight into the personality types of engineers, patent agents and others involved in the patent process. One thing I'd like to see in a 3rd edition would be more concrete illustration of patent "fences", "walls", etc. perhaps by showing some illustrative patents and claims.

As a patent and business attorney who's practiced both at law firms and in-house in Silicon Valley, I found this to be a very refreshing book. I'm considering ordering some copies for clients.

"Go outside and Play!" the wise and imperative words of my mother.

Al Gini's book is not about the nature and characteristics of Play, but rather, it is a `working' diatribe against work; with only scant attention given to `Play, Leisure and Vacation'. Paradoxically, Al Gini failed to grasp his own message. He needs to lighten up his message and play more, either that, or change the title (a much easier solution).

His book starts with the chapter "The Problem," and the problem is, of course, that we work too much; we work ourselves out of both health and holiday. I believe the problem started with Walt Disney and his seven dwarfs, those midget miners who plagued America with that addictive workaholic song - "Whistle while you . . . "

In other chapters Gini covers various social attitudes, such as "The Overspent America." This is an interesting chapter on how TV and shopping are the chief cultural activities in America. In another chapter he discuses our national addiction to sports, "the spectacle of sports anesthetizes us to that which we are either unable or unwilling to deal with, in our own lives." Other chapters include: Retirement, The Sabbath, Weekends and Traveling. All interesting and serious stuff, but . . .

In "The Importance of Being Lazy," we have a commendable sermon, with serious stats, against work; but, there is little new insight on "how" to play, neither does Gini bring any new ideas regarding leisure that challenge the reader to chill out and vacate their busy lives.

So, fellow workaholics, if you are going to be speaking at Toastmasters, the week before Labor Day, then this is the material you will want to quote: "The workaholic lacks boundaries," "We made a fetish out of work," "Work preoccupies our life" and "Workaholics no longer show up for life," etc., etc., etc. On the lighter side consider Dale Anderson's playful book "Never Act Your Age." Not a lazy read

The Importance of Being Lazy: In Praise of Play, Leisure, and Vacations, by Al Gini

First and foremost, this book is not a lazy read-it requires attention and commitment from the reader. It is informative and clearly well-researched. I find it amusing that a book on laziness requires so much of its readers.

Gini's main thesis in this book is that Americans aren't necessarily overworked, but we are defiantly under-rested. We work more hours a week than anyone (even the Japanese, he repeatedly points out), but take far less vacation, not even the vacation we're due. And when we aren't working, we certainly aren't resting. He likens the need for leisure and relaxation with the concept of the Sabbath, a useful analogy he continues through the book. Leisure time should be unwired, reflective, even spiritual-a way to look at ourselves and grow as people, bettering ourselves and becoming more connected to our communities and families.

Gini considers many reasons for us not embracing leisure and play. Primarily, we work too much-our careers define us. And even if we don't let our careers define us, we need more stuff (so does consumerism cause workaholism or is it the other way around?) Even during weekends and vacations, our time is packed with structured and prepackaged activities that claim to offer us whatever we feel is lacking in our lives for a few hundred bucks. And then it's all supposed to come to a screeching halt at retirement. We would be better served, he suggests, to find ways to improve ourselves and become more comfortable with who we are inside than flitting away all our time and money on flashiness (except when he says it, it doesn't sound nearly so shallow and new-agey).

Generally, if you have time and attention to read this book, you are not one of the ones who needs to read this book. Perhaps we are suppose to go out and proclaim the good news of laziness to others, or maybe we are suppose to pat ourselves on the back for not spending too much time at work and in front of the TV to enjoy other parts of life. Or maybe we should get our noses out of books for a little while and go play...

Richard Hagle’s career in publishing began with editorial work at Life and Time magazines. He then developed an editorial and product development company (Hagle & Co.), which he left to help develop the Book Division of Crain Communications. He then became head of acquisitions and development for Dearborn Financial Publishing. He left Dearborn to start Racom. He has been on the board of the Chicago Association of Direct Marketing and the Educational Foundation since 2004.

About the Author

Professor J. Stephen Kelly has taught marketing in the marketing department of DePaul University for more than twenty years. He has been on the boards of numerous professional organizations, including the Chicago Association of Direct Marketing Educational Foundation.

Nym Mayhall examines militancy as both a political idea and a set of practices that suffragettes employed to challenge their exclusion from the political nation. She traces the development of the suffragettes' concept of resistance from its origins within radical liberal discourse in the 1860s, to its emergence as political practice during Britain's involvement in the South African War, its reliance on dramatic spectacle by suffragette organizations, and its memorialization following enfranchisement. She reads closely the language and tactics militants used, analyzing their challenges in the courtroom, on the street, and through legislation as reasoned actions of female citizens. The differences in strategy among militants are highlighted, not just in the use of violence, but also in their acceptance and rejection of the authority of the law and their definitions of the ideal relationship between individuals and the state. Variations in the nature of protest continued even during World War I, when most suffragettes suspended their activities to serve the nation's war effort, while others joined peace movements, opposed the state's reduction of civil liberties in wartime, and continued the struggle for suffrage.
Mayhall's revealing account of the militant suffrage movement sheds new light upon the social history of gender but, more importantly, it connects this movement to the political and intellectual history of Britain. Not only did militancy play an essential role in the achievement of women's political rights but it also contributed to the practice of engaged citizenship and the growth of liberal democracy.

I'm expecting an update shortly") and movie logic (after ordering the space shuttle to land in Nevada with the most virulent smallpox strain ever and several dead astronauts aboard, the president hops Air Force One to go meet it) show Ludlum may leverage his brand name, but no longer delivers the complex situations that earned him his reputation as a premier writer of international intrigue. The Cassandra Compact

This was a very good story with lots of intrigue and secretive processes by bad people. Unfortunately it is believable that stories like this could be reality. I thoroughly enjoyed it and gave it 5 stars.

The Cassandra Compact.

Having been a "Bourne" fan, have recently started reading Covert One novels and am now a converted Covert One reader. This novel was fast moving with an excellent story line, well written and with characters that you became identified with. Now reading other novels in the collection and have been impressed with the various plots and the development of the characters. Brilliant reading and hard to put down. The story became a mind picture and the characters vivid as they evolved.

Excellent story similar to the Hades Project but Jon and Neil's Covert One team were better prepared. Can't wait to read the next one . Great job!!!!!
