His career has taken him from building a Linux-based computer network for a school to dual-datacenter high-availability infrastructures for banks and online portals. He uses the software daily to provide web serving, proxying, and media-streaming services to his customers.

Dimitri graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and received an MS in Management Information Systems at Florida State University.

Much better than other options on the topic

This book is well written and does not suffer from what I have come to call "The Packt Problem." I hope this is a sign that Packt's copy editing process has improved and that there is now a stronger commitment to offer titles that are worthy of being read because of the quality of the writing as well as the quality and uniqueness of the technical content.

Mastering NGINX is intended for experienced systems administrators and systems engineers, people who are familiar with using and administering *nix machines and configuring servers. This is not a beginner book. For me, that is a plus. It allows the author to get right down to business with NGINX.

We start with a short and typical installation chapter, complete with a discussion of modules that includes third-party modules and their benefits and risks. Installing using the package managers of several types of Linux distributions is covered along with compiling from source and the various flags and configure options available.

The next chapter jumps right in to the good stuff. Most of the NGINX materials I once used tell you what to change, but not why to change it. For a long time I was left wondering how to tell when to use specific configuration options, which files to find them in, and what the parameters are that I can use. The goal of this book is not to tell you what to do, but to describe these very things, so that in the end, you should be able to find and open an NGINX configuration file and edit it to fit your situation. Well done.

I was a little concerned when I realized that I was nearing the end of the chapter and still had some questions in my mind about some of the parameters and settings. Then I read this on page 40 in the chapter summary:

"What we did not cover in this chapter are the configuration options provided by the various modules that may be compiled into your nginx binary. These additional directives will be touched upon through the book, as that particular module is used to solve a problem. Also absent was an explanation of the variables that NGINX makes available for its configuration. These too will be discussed later in this book. This chapter's focus was on the basics of configuring NGINX."

Bravo! The author was thinking ahead, anticipated my concerns, and addressed them immediately at the point I had them.

The rest of the book gives deeper, more detailed information about specific uses for NGINX. Topics covered include using NGINX for serving mail, reverse proxying, setting up security, HTTP serving, including setting up your server for use with PHP), caching, tracking, and various sorts of troubleshooting. I was thrilled to see the appendices, especially the rewrite rule guide, as when I tried to do rewrites a few years ago, I couldn't find any good information and only achieved anything through trial and error.

I was pleased to see how complete and clear the book is. Kudos to the author, the reviewers and editors, and the publisher. I recommend this book to anyone who uses NGINX or wants to do so.

Well-written guide to nginx

Our team has been using nginx for two years, but nobody on our team could say "I know nginx well". Over the years we've been adapting snippets from the nginx wiki and random blog posts, and the often inconsistent structure of our config files reflects this trial-and-error approach.

Every 6 months I go on Amazon and see if anyone's written a well-written nginx overview that covers most of the important modules and directives, and includes sample config files to teach best practices example. Although there's 2 previous packt books available, their terrible reviews make it clear they're no better than 90% of the schlock that Packt publishes.

Fortunately, Mastering Nginx couldn't be more different. At 348 carefully-written and edited pages, it manages to provide a great overview to technically-included beginners, while covering a lot of advanced topics you'll meet in production. It's telling that one of the technical reviewers is Andrew Alexeev, a co-founder of nginx and the author of the nginx section of The Architecture Of Open Source Applications, Volume Ii

As I run a Drupal shop, I was happy to see that it includes meaningful coverage of reverse proxies, php-fpm, and even Drupal specifically. Additionally, I learned a lot looking over the sections on memory tuning, access logs for debugging, and SSL.

Based on a quick skim, I can confidently say that this book will teach you a lot about nginx, both as tutorial and reference. It's now mandatory reading for anyone on our team who will ever touch an nginx config file.

Not worth $45!

I wanted to learn how deploy Nginx for PHP. I had looked over the Nginx website and searched the web, but what I found was confusing. This book didn't really help. The information is not presented in an order that lets you start building a useful config file. Useful info to get your config file working is spread all over the book, bits and pieces here and there. As I slowly learn more about how to write the Nginx config file, I realize that the book could have done a much better job at presenting and organizing the material. At $45 for the paperback, it's a very poor value.

Entartaining but inaccurate

I am done with about a third of the book and not sure when I'll finish it so I'll write a review now. It is definitely very interesting reading especially for somebody like me, not closely familiar with American history. However, it is full of mistakes in the parts I know about (namely, Soviet history) and so I am not sure how reliable is the information on the American part of the picture. For example, Hitler and Stalin did not invade Poland "simultaneously". Stalin promised it to Hitler but than declared the army not ready and finally crossed the border exactly two weeks later claiming to the whole world his only reason for doing so was "protection" and "liberation" of brother Ukraininan and Belarus people. USSR did not "annex" Finland - more than this, decimated and crippled, Finland was able to mount a crushing offensive on the Soviet North two years later, reclaim (temporarily) all the lost territory and much beyond this. Details on the WWII on the Russia territory are also sloppy, even though it really doesn't matter for the main subject of the book. There were several similar ridiculous small mistakes, not very significant for the general line of the narrative, but annoying. Indeed, all this information is available in the school books. I guess a professional historian would notice many more errors than I did. The reason the Soviets did not detonate a 100 megaton H-bomb is claimed to be the fear for the safety of the aircraft crew. I doubt it and have heard of a completely different and much more serious reasons. Anyway, as a basic reading about this period it is a good book, reading easily, illustrated, with sidenotes. I wouldn't buy it again but enjoy reading it as a sketch, as an urban legends collection about an unfamiliar subject. As to the reported left bias - I didn't come to this part yet but the author would have hard time convincing me that communists shouldn't be fought by almost any available means. 22 years of Soviet upbringing, 2 years in Soviet army - I've had enough of it, thank you :-).

Very well done.

A very well written and easy to read account of the Cold War. An excellent book for anyone not familiar with the subject. Mr. Axelrod is an exceptionally good writer. His style is easy going without being simplistic. Some might be put off by his obvious Liberalism. But he does not veer into politically correct revisionism, so I was not bothered by his slant. Overall a very enjoyable book and a good addition to the Real History Series, all of which I have now read and can recommend.

A must for people unfamiliar with the subject

For those just getting into history this is a MUST. History books seem to change a little with every generation and this is no exception. In this series you will see a change in format which is much more attention getting and much more readable. People tend to shy away from history these days but this series is the cure.
Some people complain of historical inaccuracies in this book, but let me assure you that (although some minor ones may exist) they are trivial. If you are unfamiliar with the subject you need to read this book. If you are thinking about getting interested about history read this book. If you thought history classes were boring but are deciding to give it another shot READ THIS BOOK! In fact read the whole real history of series.

He favored an effect of light by skillfully contrasting finely unbroken and unmixed pigments with dully subdued colors, so that a golden ochre would bring out latent blue in a grey field or latent tawny in a muddy buff one. He also tended toward Veronese-type clouds to lighten and shape vaults with cumulus masses or stratus bands, as in his "Discovery of the true cross"; dogs to colorkey Cleopatra in "The banquet with Antony" and graphic and tonal range complexities in "The meeting of Antony and Cleopatra"; and poles to finetune viewer attention, as with his Santa Maria dei Gesuati ceiling frescoed pike to increase interest in the figure of St Dominic. Against expectations at the time about dramatically interacting figures, he parallel played arms, hands and heads, without bringing angled faces and pointing fingers together into any interpersonal contact, as Picassolike people deconstructed and divided into bodyparts. Also against usual practice, his painting was more caught up in a Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione-type showing and beholding than with discovery, as with "Adoration of the Magi" and "Institution of the rosary" handed down from heaven. The Veronese-style asymmetry of his figures lounging and lunging around picture edges, the princess off-center with her escort, the riverbank almost half-empty of figures, and the unexpected scale, with a miniature Miriam and a sliver of a dog, aggravated one critic into sawing "The finding of Moses" in two, with the severed part becoming known as "Landscape with halberdier." His preferred oblong format was considered just as aggravating in his "Madonna and saints," with its purgatorial rescue scene so drawn out on the left that another critic cut that painting temporarily into two. Along with Domenico di Pace Beccafumi, Duccio de Buoninsegna, Gentile da Fabriano, many Northern European painters, and Antonio Pisanello, he betrayed the tradition from Giotto, Masaccio and Raphael of putting a picture together as a framed rectangular window on proportionally scaled human figures in a definite space as verbally intelligent meaning- or story-painting to be seen from only one viewing point. But trend-bucking Giambattista TIEPOLO AND THE PICTORIAL INTELLIGENCE of his aesthetic, color-oriented and visually impacting works were behind successful fresco and oil on canvas painting throughout the North Italian 45th parallel cities of Bergamo, Milan, Trevigiana, Udine, Venice, Verona, Vicentina and Vicenza. His sculpturelike art was always part of and dependent on where it was displayed, taking in building form, layout and lighting: my sculptress mother always said, and my artist sister continues to say, that Tiepolo was not afraid of anything, and his biggest painting, "The four continents" fresco for the Wurzburg Residenz stairway hall ceiling, ended up one of the greatest and largest in Europe even though it was located off the beaten path and bravely doled unpicturelike changing light and odd angles to viewers needing to climb and walk around just to see it. enlightening about our virtual shadow

I loved this book -- so thought-provoking and enlightening. Gave me a new way to think about how technology is changing my reality. It was interesting, reading it in an airport on my Droid; it gave me a way to stand outside myself and experience all the layers of what I was doing at the moment. Without a shadow of a doubt

This is an excellent summary of how the way we document our daily lives with smartphones and social media shapes our behaviour. It's also a reflect upon our memories vs our experiences of the everyday world. I enjoyed reading this because the author writes clearly and in a entertaining manner. These ideas can be explored in more detail but as they stand, it's so much more accessible.

A great meditation on the increasing tensions we face as technology continues to disintermediate time, space and community -- documentation vs. participation, physical co-presence vs. online communities, and content vs. references to the content of others... all of these conundrums get treatment. I loved this book -- thought-provoking and enlightening.

Great Book!!

This book is great I bought this in addition to the required book for our maternal-newborn clinical rotation and it was a great addition. It provides information in a nice clear and concise format. There is not a lot of fluff and it is easy to read! I used this book more than the required textbook. It is more like reading someone's notes they took from a class or book. If you are looking for wordy descriptions and pages of the same information with one simple concept that could be summarized in a few sentences then this book is not for you. If you are looking to direct your studying and getting important information with minimal reading than this is the book for you! I was glad I purchased this extra book. Everyone else wanted to share and I loaned it out several times during the semester.

This book is just ok in my opinion. I like a text book with TEXT and lots of it. This book is to "listy"...it is just bullet after bullet of info. It's to the point I guess, but I prefer a classic textbook with more explanation.
