Interesting, Captivating and Thought-Provoking!

The historical-era that the author encompasses is of fundamental importance to the Islamic world and its implications on various Muslim communities in the present. The Ismaili's in the Middle Ages, is a detailed yet interesting account of how the various Ismaili communities managed to construct an identity via various tactics so as to respond to the challenges of the various religious and socio-political scopic-regimes within their lands.

The detective-like narrative style of the book makes it interesting and unique from the usual story book or academic treatise, because Shafique Virani starts off the book with a basic historical primer on various Muslims sects and the location of Shia-Ismailism within the particular context. Building upon this basic knowledge, the author references translations of various Saraiki, Gujarati, Russian, Arabic, Persian and other linguistic works along with informative critical analyses so as to cement the patches in the obscure history of the Ismaili's during this era. An era of uncertainty, when the Ismaili communities in the aftermath of the destruction caused by Genghis Khan and his hordes attempted to gather themselves together and successfully thrive through the continuum of time.

The book should not be taken as a mere historical-narrative of the invasion of the Mongols, rather it is an analysis of the various methods and strategies that the Ismaili's used to safe-guard their communities and religious-belief from other external threats during this time-period. It is almost like a success-story of a persecuted community almost bought to the brink of extinction due to the barbaric Mongol onslaught.

I think, the book is bound to provoke an emotionally tear-jerking response along with its factually authentic account of the community and how it re-structured and preserved its vibrant historical traditions and the core-belief in the "Imam of the Time" so as to emerge from the ashes almost like what Virani describes as a "Phoenix."

It should also be emphasized that Ismaili's in the Middle Ages is a not to be
taken lightly due to its engaging narrative as a mystery-book, rather it is a solid scholarly work that extracts information from solid and credible primary and secondary sources accompanied with detailed bibliographic referencing so as to allow the scholar or the curious average reader an opportunity to trail outside the covers of the book, and trace the origin of Shafique Virani's train of thought and interpretation of historical facts and arguments.

Much Better Than Part One

I found part one to drag a little. Almost as if I already knew everything that would happen. Stu is a bit weak and a bit naive and right from the beginning the reader can see that the rich, self-involved alpha males are going to take advantage and use him without his knowledge or consent. Then the whole story changes.

By the time part two begins, this is now a gripping and magical journey. Stu is now Sue and reveling in his/her musical inventiveness and performing genius. As Sue's confidence and professionalism grows, so does her fame and power over audiences. Parts two, three and four are a dramatic and delightful story, much less predictable than part one.

All four parts of On the Road-Again are a single novel, albeit a huge one, and should be read together. As a single story, this is a very good story with a long slow start.

Edited to add: although a big deal is made throughout the book about women who rock, example Chrissy Hynde, and although the protagonist writes her autograph, "Rock Hard, Suzie", no mention is ever made of Suzi Quatro or her monumental album "Rock Hard".

OK I'll come straight out and say it..This is the best tg series to date!! Well done Karin!! Before reading part 2 of 3 I had considered Tanya's "Behind the Enemy" as probley #1,..She's written some great ones as has
Karin.This series just blow all the others in the dust!! Yep your there journeying and experiencing with Suzi..hope she has plenty more like this ready!! Can't wait!!!

In Horihide we celebrate the life and work of one of Japan's most famous tattoo artists, Kazuo Oguri, the pioneer who introduced traditional Japanese tattoo iconography and techniques to the West. Since Oguri's visit to Sailor Jerry in Hawaii in the early 1960s, Western tattooing has never been the same and Japanese body suit tattoos are now appreciated throughout the world as a pinnacle of the art of tattooing.

Well written and great information included

Awesome, awesome, awesome! Makes understanding comparative politics easy and insightful. The book is easy to read, easy to understand, even with content that is a bit deep. This has been so useful in my studies for my comparative politics class this semester. Even if you aren't enrolled in a class like this, the book provides extremely beneficial information in understanding how things work. Politics can be difficult to maneuver for those outside its studies. This book makes it easy to understand regardless of background level. Would recommend to everyone.

Extremely flimsy with hideous cover, but contents are good.

Every time I see the cover of this book, I have the urge to take a sharpie and just color the whole thing black. It's not even THAT ugly, but I just can't stand it. It looks like a bad powerpoint title slide made by a high school freshman (no offense to high school freshmen). The book is also very flimsy-- it's thin and soft cover and easily damaged, which is unfortunate, because I do want to keep this book for a while.

Beyond the superficial, outward judgement, this textbook is pretty good. It happens to be another one of the few textbooks I enjoy reading. The pictures are great, the introductions are fascinating and the format is really good. It can be a bit confusing at times when explaining some trickier definitions, but overall, it does an excellent job of drawing you into the world of comparative politics.
