A Year in the Life of a Complete and Total Genius (The Arthur Bean Stories), by Stacey Matson

Arthur Bean is a genius-it's just that no one else realizes this quite yet. He's going to be a world-famous author, and the first step is to win this year's story-writing contest. What he writes is pretty funny, but it gets him into trouble too.

Like with his English teacher.
And the school newspaper advisor.
And cool girl Kennedy.
And Arthur's number one nemesis, Robbie Zack.

But all great authors spark controversy, so Arthur's not too concerned. Through letters, email exchanges, "SEE ME" notes and doodles, enter the funny, touching, and often mixed-up mind of Arthur Bean, creative genius.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up—Readers meet Arthur Bean as he is entering seventh grade somewhat belatedly due to his mother's death. Despite the sadness of his home life, Arthur is quick to assure his teacher that he is a gifted writer and will one day be a famous author. In fact, Arthur is so convinced of his eventual greatness that he comes across as a know-it-all in English class, completely convinced he will win the story competition at the end of the year with minimal effort. That's probably a good thing, because with the distractions added to Arthur's life in the form of a writing partnership with Kennedy, the popular girl, and tutoring Robbie, the boy who calls him names, the preteen has a lot on his plate. So much so, that his amazing writing turns into amazing writer's block and his emotions, which he tries hard to hide, come out in unexpected ways. Written entirely in notes, emails, stories, and journal entries, this novel successfully captures the trials and tribulations of junior high school. As readers follow Arthur through the year, they will see him change in ways that aren't always likable but are usually relatable and that lead to real growth. There are a few stereotypes—the bully has trouble writing, the popular girl is self-absorbed—but readers will be willing to overlook them. VERDICT This readable title is a good choice for libraries wanting to add to their realistic fiction collection.—Heather Webb, Worthington Libraries, OH

Arthur Bean is hilarious!! Great gift for everyone!!! Definite must read!

I loved this book! It was so cute! Little Arthur Bean just tells it like it he sees it. He doesn't care, that's how he sees it and that's how it is. The whole story is told by reports, journal entries, essays, and school projects. He writes about everything he feels in his reading journal. Little does he know that he has to turn in that reading journal at the end of the year.

He wants to write for the newspaper, but is constantly being told that he needs to look for the good in what he is covering. He also uses this chance to get back at his arch nemesis, Robbie Zack. He does not like Robbie and that is putting it mildly. Robbie is always picking on Arthur. Whether he is tripping him or spitting on his paperwork or just doing the normal things the bigger boys do to the littler boys in class, Robbie is doing it. When Ms. Whitehead decides that Arthur needs to tutor Robbie one day a week after school, oh the boys are not happy. The notes they turn in to Ms. Whitehead regarding their progress are hilarious.

I got a lot of chuckles out of this book and felt a little pity for Arthur as well. This is definitely one that I highly recommend. Kids will love it and so will adults. It will be great for everyone on your Christmas list!!

Thanks Sourcebooks and Net Galley for providing me with this free e-galley in exchange for an honest review. I hadn't laughed so much in a long time!

Written through journals, emails and letters. An intriguing format. Grades 5-8
By Sunshine on a Rainy Day
SUMMARY: "Arthur Bean is a genius. It’s just that no one else realizes this quite yet." Arthur hopes to make it big by winning this year's writing contest. But too many problems get in his way. He make some poor choices that land him in trouble. But by the end of the school year, he has learned a thing or two and maybe even made a new friend.
This book is written completely in the form of letters, emails, school assignments, and journal entries.

THE GOOD: By using the writing formats instead of a typical novel there is added interest to the book. There is lots of humor throughout the book and Arthur learns to look at people differently by getting to know them better instead of just judging them based on what he sees on the surface. Arthur is going through some tough stuff and makes poor choices because of it, but his writing helps him to process these hardships and helps him feel better about things.
THE NOT AS GOOD: When I started reading the book, I really liked the format with the journal entries, notes, emails, etc., but the addition of the regular teacher's assignments began to bog down the story. I felt the book would have been better off without the assignments (in very full detail) or with fewer ones. They lend too much seriousness to the story and slows it down. By the end of the book I did not feel I really knew Arthur deep down as much as I would have liked. He's very sarcastic, he plagiarizes, he likes one girl in particular, but who is he really? This book is from his perspective about himself and he thinks he's pretty awesome.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Grades 5-8

NOTE: I received a free ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I totally loved this book
By David's Wife
I totally loved this book! Written in the form of 13 year old Arthur's Reading Journal, school newspaper articles, e-mails to Kennedy, his writing partner who he has a crush on, and his notes about tutoring Robbie, his nemesis, the story is simple to read in short bursts. I like the teacher's responses to some of his writing attempts and the cartoon illustrations. I enjoyed the book so much that I read parts of it aloud to my husband and daughter who also thought it was hilarious. Throughout the book, Arthur is also dealing with his mother's death and his father's sadness and the general life of a 7th grader. I received this book free to review from Netgalley and I highly recommend it!
