About the Author
Hammond Innes (1913-1998) was a compulsive writer and traveller. He wrote over 30 books - thrillers with sturdy, plain-speaking British heroes at the centre; ordinary men caught up in impossible events. Innes journeyed all over the world, working as a journalist, whaler, soldier, but primarily sailing the high seas and racing in his yacht the Mary Deare. Surprisingly Entertaining

I picked up a used copy of this book on a chance at a 2nd-hand store--lucky! It turned out to be an engaging read and quite entertaining. The writing is very taut and well-crafted. The author is clearly in control of the plot development and characterization is excellent. The detail offered about ships--both sailing and steaming--is incredible and spang on accurate. The story unfolds at a good pace with enough texture to be completely credible yet rapidly enough to be engaging.

The novel opens with a prolonged nautical action sequence, then moves into a detailed court proceeding, and concludes with a few surprise twists and a nautical chase scene. Believable, enjoyable, and very well-written.

OutstandingAdventure Storry, Expert writing, Movie Potential

My wife picked up this book in a used bookstore in Seward,Alaska, while on a bike trip. We were looking for a cheep read and were shocked that we had bumbled onto a timeless classic. Half way through my wife, who is a professor and creative writer herself, got so exhited about the storry that she cut the book in half so that I could start on the beginning half of the book. The storry is outstanding (and I generally am not a fan of maritime themes), the writing rivals the great authors of the century, and the research is flawless. A must read. It is the second best book that I have ever read, behind "To Whome the Bell tolls"....this one is a lot less depressing.

for easy sailing fiction, this is as good as it gets!

Classic! Like several other reviewers, I just stumbled on an ancient paperback copy of this in a used bookstore, and what a little treasure it is! hard to believe that in 1956 you could pick this book up for just 35 cents, the same book I just bought for 2.50 (though at a mere 4.7% compound interest I guess it's just as well I bought it now, and not in 1956). I'm so happy to see it's still available; keep your expectations low and this is a fast-moving, cleanly written little sailing adventure that stands the test of time; absolutely perfect vacation, travel, or relaxing read. If you're looking for more: I still have not read the highly touted classic `Riddle of the Sands' but I imagine it's very similar.

If you are seeking meaning in your life, read this book!

This is a great little book for people that are searching for meaning in a modern world. It looks at the common core of the world's wisdom traditions in a very thoughtful and sometimes even poetic way. It is not really a comprehensive, academic exploration of the world's wisdom traditions, but rather a summary with personal reflections from a man who studied religions all of his life.

The power of this little book is revealed in the language that the author uses to express his points so beautifully. It sheds light on the interiority of the universe in a way that the average person can relate to. In other words, it's not written like a philosophical treatise.

There are some criticisms below that indicate that this book is dated. There is some truth to that if what you are looking for is the most up-to-date, factual and well-referenced book on the subject. However, if you are new to this area, you will find an enjoyable, educational, fascinating and thought provoking journey into the very heart of the world's religions.

Because of the nature of the subject matter, Huston Smith is sharing a lot of his own personal viewpoints. However, as someone who has been exploring this territory for his entire 80+ year life with a best seller on world religions under his belt, he is a quite a credible tour guide in this subject. That is not to say there aren't shortcomings to the book, but he writes from his heart and years of experience, which to me is well worth listening to.

I like Huston Smith's reflections on the shortcomings of science and I think most people will find them good food for thought. Science holds such a place of prominence in our culture that alternatives to the modern and post-modern worldviews are not often entertained. This book certainly raises the right questions in the area, but some of the criticism about not touching on quantum physics, living system theory, etc. is warranted. This would have given the book more punch in these chapters.

I still give Huston Smith a 5 for his power to use words that touch the heart and provoke responses from people's depths. It is very difficult to write a book that is all things to all people, but for its length, this is a wonderful read and introduction to the perrenial philosophy.

An Enjoyable Read

While Forgotten Truth may be a highly personal reflection on the world's reliigons by a man who may know more about them than anybody else alive, it still touches on themes that can be found, if not specifically, then at least generally in historical world religions. The book reflects Smith's specific philosophical interests, as its main thesis is based on the old Greek idea of a chain of being stretching from matter to spirit, but this framework can at least approximate the viewpoints of other religions and religious philosophies the world over.

While the book decries the perceived elevation of science to a standard of values and ultimately the only legitimate way to acquire knowledge about reality, it has a genuinely positive view of science as a way to gain knowledge about the material world and a glimpse of that which is "beyond the material." At the same time, I worry that Smith has too much faith in the research of psychedelics to back up the formulations of the primordial tradition. Even in the 1970's this faith was unwarranted.

Overall, I appreciate that Smith has offered us a glimpse into his personal philosophy and that he argues that traditional religious worldviews have a more integral, fluid, and trans-historical vision of reality than the modern worldviews with their basis in notions of historical progress, the hope offered by advancements in science and technology, and the pervasive attitude that the physical universe and life on this earth are the only reality that we will ever know, even if Smith's argument sounds highly Neoplatonic and so non-universal at times.

Therefore I recommend this book, even though I am not sure it really uncovers the common vision of the world's religions as much as it interprets these religions in light of a Western, highly Platonic worldview. Still, it is a commendable presentation of the primordial tradition.

A Suprisingly Subversive Little Book

Huston Smith doesn't seem like the type to write a subversive book. A highly respected academic and scholar of religion, Smith comes off, in his other works, as the soul of moderation (and by all accounts, he is). Here we see a different side of Dr. Smith, however- for 167 all-too-brief pages, he takes the gloves off.

In "Forgotten Truth", Smith goes on the warpath. His target? All the "sacred cows" of modernity. Neo-Darwinism? Smash. Materialist ontology? Bash. Progress? Crash. In their place, Smith creates a syncretic view of spiritual realities throughout history, and their basic structure- the psychic plane of the shamanistic "spirit world", the celestial realm of angels and archetypes, all the way up to absolute spirit- the Godhead, Sunyata, Brahma. Contesting modernity's "reign of quantity", Smith insists on the superiority of hierarchies of quality.

Smith isn't always entirely convincing, but he does present a daring critique of materialism and neo-darwinism. The appendix, on Stan Grof's LSD research, is also a worthwhile addition.

The purpose underlying the two volumes is to enrich the study of race in European though by turning away from the focus on European encounters with African and Amerindians, which tended to dominate the history of racial though in Europe, and looking instead at encounters with Japanese. ...� [T]he text of this volume covers only slightly more than half of the pages and most of the rest is taken up by endnotes, many of them as long as a paragraph and some filling half a page, together with a huge bibliography covering works in twelve languages. Not only do the notes testify to the prodigious labor that has gone into this book, but they also show how meticulously Kowner has explored the ramifications and details of encounters between Europeans and the various Others they encountered. ... [The book is] unsurpassed in its careful examination of European writings on Japan, and the efficient index makes Kowner's analyses and coverage of the literature easily accessible." Women are now more concerned than ever about the appearance of their genitals. The convergence of the trend to remove pubic hair which leaves the vulva more visible and open to scrutiny, the normalization of oral sex, and the ubiquitous exposure to pornography and the unrealistic ideals it creates, have led an increasing number of women to feel serious anxiety about their own genitalia. Frequently this manifests as a lack of self-confidence or diminished body self-image; for an increasing number of women, the level of psychological distress is so severe that they undergo genital cosmetic surgery. Labiaplasty (reduction of the inner labia, most often for cosmetic purposes) is now the fastest growing type of cosmetic surgery and is in many ways following the same growth pattern and cultural acceptance as breast augmentation did in its early years.

While vulvas are more visible than ever, most women still have a strong sense of shame with regard to discussing or displaying their own, or looking at another's vulva. Pornography, whether online or in print, has come to serve as a very common tool by which women and men learn about sexual behavior and anatomy. Unfortunately, pornography depicts a severely limited scope of genital diversity. Analyses have found that there is a strong tendency to display genitals at the extreme end of the range of diversity: small, hairless and with little or no visible inner labia. This misrepresentation is dangerous as it conveys an artificial norm to which women often feel they need to conform.

There are very few resource tools available for women and men to gain a true appreciation of genital diversity. This skewed understanding leads many women to feel that they are alone and abnormal in their body and in their experience. The awareness of such procedures as labiaplasty can serve to further heighten women's belief that there is in fact a "normal", and that surgery is a suitable remedy for "abnormal" genitalia. This project stands in defiance of these societal constructions which serve to limit our growth, understanding and empowerment.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

I'll Show You Mine is a photo study of female genitalia and a window into women's experiences of their genitals. The book contains 120 photographs of 60 women, with all women photographed from the same two positions. Each woman was photographed in the same conditions and the photos are shown in the book in true-to-life size and color, as this is the best method to accurately display the diversity of female form. Accompanying each woman's photos is text written by the woman, detailing her challenges and/or successes as pertains to her relationship with her genitals. The photos in the book demonstrate and celebrate the wonderful diversity of the vulva; the stories illuminate the range of experiences that women have relating to their genitals in a world where mass media and pornography increasingly set the standards for sexuality and the look of all body parts, even our genitals.

The book is printed in Canada and is made to the highest quality in all ways: it is 7" tall by 10" wide and opens in a landscape layout; the paper is matte 100 lb FSC-approved stock and the ink is soy based; the covers and spine are coated with a scuff-proof laminate that protects them from minor damage and all but eliminates fingerprints.

10% of the sales of the book is donated to women's charities, locally and internationally.

About the Author
With the intent to educate and start conversations, Wrenna Robertson founded Show Off Books, Inc. to publish her first book, I'll Show You Mine. Released in 2011, I'll Show You Mine provides a unique and powerful tool to counter the disturbing trends and misinformation in our society surrounding artificial standards for normalcy and beauty in female genitalia.

A perpetual student, Wrenna has two Bachelor of Science degrees, granted by the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia, and a Master of Science from UBC which she completed in 2010. She has served as a Research Associate at UBC s Institute for Aboriginal Health and a Student Lecturer at UBC s College of Health Disciplines. Wrenna attained these accomplishments while choosing to work as an exotic dancer, which she does to this day.

Born in Windsor, Ontario, Wrenna moved to BC in the late nineties, ultimately settling in Vancouver is 2002.

Gorgeous photo book with great stories

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book to offer my clients. I'll Show You Mine is a beautifully photographed book of vulvas accompanied by small, personal stories. I wish I would have had a book like this when I was younger as it offers a rare opportunity to see the female form without the context of pornography being attached. These are women from all over, giving you an authentic view of the awesomeness of the vulva! Some of the stories are heartbreaking, some frustrating, but all inspirational. I recommend this book for counselors, teachers, physicians and well, everyone else.

A Beautiful and Powerful Book

What a powerful and necessary book. I am a sexual health educator working with teens, and it is alarming how much misinformation young people (and old) have regarding genital diversity. This book blows those misconceptions away, displaying such a breadth of body types. I have seen the effect this book has on young women, and for that, I think it should be mandatory curriculum in health education classes. The short narratives written by each women are similarly transformative, and there is such a range of experiences that most women will be able to relate to many of them, while gaining a deeper understanding of the experiences of other women, including two transgender women.
This is a new favorite book in my collection.

HIdden beauty

This certainly isn't the first photo essay dedicated to vulvae in all their variety. No matter - each collection offers a different perspective. This presents each woman in frontal view, as you'd see her standing, then again in more open pose, revealing the inner detail. And, with each pair of pictures, there's a brief essay by the woman offering herself to the camera. The essays range widely in tone, some more mystical, some (to quote one contributor) "Feministy or Earth Mother Birthing Goddessy," many with darker back-stories of shame or abuse. As a male reader with warmest regard for the women who've been my friends and intimates, I was shocked (though maybe not surprised) at the number in that last category.

But, however much their thoughts interest me, the photos dominate this study. At the risk of sounding obvious, every woman is unique, in face, figure, and all her little details. Her vulva might display that uniqueness more than any other part of her. Although built to a common plan, as faces are, each one differs from every other far more than faces do. I don't mean just in the piercings and grooming variations, but in the natural sculpture of delicate tissue. Perhaps that individuality, each one being so distinctive, is part of why genitals are so often hidden - the commonplace parts of her are for everyday business, but her unique self is something to share only with her closest.

More the loveliness of each one, the timelessness impressed me, too. The front notes say that the volunteers range from nineteen to their sixties. For the life of me, I couldn't tell by looking. Maybe a more mature woman would be less likely to dye her pubic hair or to have piercings, but those are indirect clues only. Maybe "forever young" isn't the right term, or even respectful to fully mature women, but "forever charming" covers what matters.

Ben Butina's "How to Find a Good Therapist" efficiently covers the important details with a very encouraging and conversational tone, acknowledging some of the common stereotypes about therapy.

Recognizing that selecting a therapist can feel intimidating at first, Butina wisely covers not only the more cerebral and "theoretical" topics such as therapeutic approaches, but also some of the more anxiety-producing topics often at the forefront of one's mind, such as money and payment. Along the way, he blends useful aids such as point-by-point comparisons between different types of therapy with simple and well-defined exercises.

Having backgrounds in both life coaching and therapy, I appreciate one of the guide's key assumptions: we rarely get what we really want unless we first take the time to clearly define what we want, and choosing an effective guide in a life transformation process is no exception.

The book clarifies some areas that can confuse professionals themselves, such as the differences between various professional titles and degrees, and considerations regarding mental health insurance coverage. Written in diary form, this truly hilarious picture book tracks the ins and outs of a worm's life from the perspective of the worm family's young son. Difficulties such as having no arms, having a head that looks a lot like your rear end, and facing the dangers imposed by people digging for bait are balanced by a loving family and good friends. The young protagonist describes playing with his friend Spider, engaging in a variety of activities at school, and interacting with his parents and sister. Packed into these droll slice-of-worm-life vignettes are a few facts about earthworms and their behavior, all rendered with a dry sense of humor. The full-color watercolor-and-ink illustrations sprawl across the pages in lush earth tones. Bliss's cartoons give the worms lots of personality without overly anthropomorphizing them. The use of multiple perspectives will have children eagerly looking at the pictures to identify objects and locales. Primary-grade youngsters will especially appreciate the classroom scenes. This quirky worm's-eye view of the world makes these ubiquitous invertebrates a little more understandable and a lot more fun.

There's no sustained story here, as there was in Cronin's wonderful Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type (2000), but the hilarious vignettes of the worm-child with his family, friends, and enemies show the absurd in humans as much as in the wriggling creatures in the earth. When the worm forgets his lunch, he eats his homework, and he loves telling his older sister that her face will always look like her rear end. One advantage of being a worm is that he never has to go to the dentist: no cavities. "No teeth, either," says Dr. D. Kay. The pictures are both silly and affectionate, whether the worm holds a pencil or hugs his favorite pile of dirt. This is a book every kid should read or have read to. It's great humor especially for kids from 1st grade to 4th grade. It's so funny!

Such a Great Book!

I bought this book when it first came out and have shared it with so many people who love it! This book is a hoot! A little worm keeps a journal, sharing daily life from a worm's perspective and it's very funny - such as "Dad was busy eating the newspaper" and worries about fishing season starting or trying to make it across a playground blacktop with kids jumping rope. I just love this book! The illustrations are wonderful, but the text is excellent. Just one of the best books I own! Kids love it, too, of course!

This book breaks down disciplinary barriers to set the stage for systems we do not even dream of today. Microsystems have a long history, dating back to the earliest days of mic- electronics. While integrated circuits developed in the early 1960s, a number of laboratories worked to use the same technology base to form integrated sensors. The idea was to reduce cost and perhaps put the sensors and circuits together on the same chip. By the late-60s, integrated MOS-photodiode arrays had been developed for visible imaging, and silicon etching was being used to create thin diaphragms that could convert pressure into an electrical signal. By 1970, selective anisotropic etching was being used for diaphragm formation, retaining a thick silicon rim to absorb package-induced stresses. Impurity- and electrochemically-based etch-stops soon emerged, and "bulk micromachining" came into its own.

Wonderful book on a complex subject

In 23 chapters, Senturia brings together a dizzying array of fields of engineering necessary to design micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and examples of MEMS products. For instance, he covers Euler beam theory, the Navier-Stokes equation, micromachining, feedback circuits, and electronic noise, and then anchors these topics with a gyroscope and a DNA amplifier, among other devices.

Senturia's approach to some chapters strikes me as a little idiosyncratic, but he does convey the principles quite well. His love for the material shines through in a way that many authors cannot manage.

Unlike books on single topics, this text cannot be used as a definitive guide to anything. Because Sentuira only has only 30 pages or so for each of the very broad topics that he covers, he doesn't cover any of them in much depth. However, the reader does get a sense of the issues that each physical domain presents. For those who need to know more, Senturia provides a short list of further reading in each chapter. I think of this book as a comprehensive starting point that can help me determine what further investigation I need.

Aesthetically, the text is somewhat lacking. The small pages are cramped compared to those of larger-format texts, and the figures are subpar.

Very good reference

This book is definitely a must-have for anyone interested in MEMS design. It's one of the classic references on microsystems that everyone should have read at least once.

The sections on mathematical modeling are especially good, and the set of detailed examples at the end are clear and illustrative.

To name some drawbacks, the chapter on fabrication is maybe a bit out of date, and more solved practical exercises are missing.

Interesting Insights On The Development of The Venture Capital Industry In the U.S. and Abroad

I recently finished reading A Vision for Venture Capital: Realizing the Promise of Global Venture Capital and Private Equity. The book is an (assisted) autobiography chronicling the storied career of Peter A. Brooke. As founder of TA Associates and Advent International, Mr. Brooke was crucial to the early development of the venture capital industry - he was truly a pioneer for the industry not only in the U.S. but in his work spreading the venture capital model internationally.

The book is split into two parts. The first half of the book takes you through his career - his development as a venture capitalist, building TA Associates, and then his shift in focus to international investments and the founding of Advent International. The second half of the book covers how to add value through venture investing and Mr. Brooke's outlook for the future. If you don't have time to read the whole book, I highly recommend the second part - there are some great takeaways and you still get many anecdotes from his storied career.

It was clear that Mr. Brooke is passionate about the true role of venture capital and it was a point he drove home throughout the book. Below is an excerpt that I felt exemplified Mr. Brooke's ideology.
When discussing the industry's early moves into international markets and the difficulty getting U.S. based investors to see potential Mr. Brooke said:

"It didn't seem to have occurred to many venture capitalists and private equity managers that they could be a force for economic and social progress in the world. To me, however, this is the whole point of what we do. The frontier in the industry is wherever the skills of venture capital and private equity managers can be applied to address economic problems such as poverty, underdevelopment, and lack of opportunity, along with the many social ills associated with them. To put it another way, the pioneers today are those who apply their entrepreneurial spirit and problem-solving skills not only to make a profit for their investors and themselves but also to improve the lives of others."

Overall, I think it's a great read, especially for those starting out or considering a career in venture capital or private equity. You get a lot of history on the industry's development and can really broaden your mindset on how to approach investing. The book is also great for those involved with venture capital and private equity investing in the emerging markets. Underdeveloped, frontier markets arguably stand to benefit the most from private equity and venture capital investment and it's sure to be where much of the industry's growth comes in the coming years. Approaching these markets with some of Mr. Brooke's insights and lessons would surely be beneficial.
