A compact book containing all the informations needed when either building or buying a PC.
By Gert Bo Thorgersen
I now during 32 years daily have been using PCs, and own 10 – 15 books concerning PCs, most concerning programming, but my last bought PC building book now is 20 years old so I had to buy a new one.

I didn’t buy the book for learning how to build a PC, as I learned this back in the schools, but because I’m now on the 12th year live in Thailand, and here totally am missing in being up to date concerning the part inside the PCs, and soon will have to rebuild one of my PCs. So I’m searching knowledge for the best combination of Motherboard, Music card, RAM memory, the Ports, and so on, to use, when renewing the actual PC.

When living in Denmark I weekly was meeting in a PC group, and went to the libraries for searching and reading in many of the excellent PC magazines from USA and Denmark, but here in we have no libraries, so I instead have to buy books, or try to search in Google.

This book, which I received few days ago, is really excellent, by the short and easy writings which precisely are telling us all what we need to know, and a bit more. And this either if we are building, or rebuilding a PC, or if go visiting chops and there buy a new PC, maybe the first one.

The book contains many good pictures, and many small details, as for example on the side 40, during the installation of the Memory Modules we are reminded that our bodies are containing electrostatic electricity, which can destroy this card, and then how to take care of this. And for example we on the side 152, concerning USC Flash Drives, learn that there are 2 different kinds, which we nearly newer is mentioned in the specifications. Newer before did I know anything about this difference which actually results in different speed, price, living time, and G bites. And for example we on the side 53 get a drawing showing the 11 different PC Ports, from the e SATA to the VGA; helpful to me, as it can be hard to remember some of the ports.

And a couple of places we learn that it sometimes can be easy to misunderstand the data stated, as on side 113, where we concerning Hard Drives (Hard disk) have a FireWire drive at 800 Mbps, and a SATA drive at 300 MBps, and asked which is the faster? I shows up that it’s the SATA as 800 Mbps = 100 MBps, so the SATA 3 times faster!

The only thing which I’m missing in the book, is that when on the side 169 read about the Ink Cartridges to the Printers, we read that when one of the color runs out in a single cartridge we have to buy a new, which make this expensive. But in practice we refills by use of needles. Here in Thailand actually a single cartridge to my Printer cost precisely of the price for a complete new Printer like mine!

It’s an excellent god book, with short writing, and helpful pictures, containing all what we need.

Yes, it's worth 5 stars and more for the money I'm going to save installing RAM
By Amazon Customer
It's a great book for guys like me, the guys without any real experience beyond the software challenges of Dragon Naturally Speaking and Adobe Dreamweaver.
I gained the confidence to dive into my computers, and that's going to save me a ton on RAM. If you understand what Windows 10 and Dreamweaver mean to munching on RAM, zombie-like, you know what I mean. Yes, if you want to dive into your computer, this is a good book to begin reading and studying. It's simplified and has clear pictures. Well done.

By Patrick A. Barrett
This is a solid introduction to the main components of a PC, their relationship to one another, and how to put them all together into a working machine. The tech listed in this book is only a year or so past cutting edge, and the only additional info needed to put a rig together is spec data for each component the builder intends to use. This really isn't an oversight as Yarnold fully explains what types of parts are needed for different levels of builds and then shows you where to find the information on manufacturers' websites to determine what will work with your plans. It's also a quick read with lots of well photographed illustrations to guide you through some of the intricacies involved in connecting things to a motherboard, installing adequate cooling, and finally bundling cables. After only about 30 minutes skimming relevant passages, I was able to do an extensive upgrade on an existing system where I swapped power supplies, vid card, and hard drive on the first try. Having all the information in one place saved me at least three hours of hunting down websites to figure out what I needed to do. In a few months, when I make my first rig myself, I have very little doubt that this book will save me money in that I won't buy needlessly expensive parts or lose any to installer error.
