Short presentation on Pavel's flexibility programs

Review – Flexible Steel by Jon Engum

This is a short presentation of a mobility program that Jon Engum derived from Pavel's “Super Joints” and “Relax into Stretch.” The introduction is well written by Mark Reifkind. Jon is a 7th degree black belt and instructor and Grand Master in Tae wan Do, holds 4th degree black belts in Hapkido and Kumdo/Kumbup, as well as being a Master RKC Instructor. Jon writes of himself as a learner from the school of hard knocks and early martial arts competitions, comparing himself to the cowboys who train hard all week for the competitions on the weekend. He says he knows better now, and is much wiser in his approach to fitness. His flexibility program is the result of finding that he was much stiffer than his beginning students in martial arts.

The presentation of the stretching program is clear and illustrated with good photographs of Jon himself doing the workout. The program is challenging and includes several hip and back stretches derived from the martial art world. The program is a little more than Pavel presents in "Super Joints" and is an easy to follow presentation of the program. It serves its purpose of presenting Jon's version of Pavel's programs in an easy to follow format. Jon has more floor exercises and more hold in place that Pavel does in his program. Jon's program does not require the balancing ability that Pavel's program in "Super Joints" demands.

Yes, the program if followed as Jon outlines it will develop good flexibility in an individual who pursues it diligently. It is a good program for developing flexibility but will require some time to accomplish it's goals. This would be true of any good flexibility program and I respect that Jon does not claim overnight success for his program.

Little new information, but good for those just starting out

Good for those with little stretching experience. Mr. Engum appears to be an expert martial artist and fitness expert, however, the book just didn't live up to expectations. Well written and useful pictures, but same exercises taught in most martial arts schools and fitness boot camps.

A story we should all read.

Oh, Ben Elton!! This book is your best. You've told the story of the Jews of Berlin. How their citizenship and human rights were stripped away little by little, right after right until they were regarded as sub human, who deserved no rights at all. It is a moving story and one that must have been all too common in that era of madness. Do you think your neighbours could never turn against you, betray you? Read this book. Do you think society would never tolerate a government capable of such awful cruelty? Read this book. And do you think a whole country cannot cast aside reason and humanity, cannot be infected with the same evil mania? Read ths book. I don't think I'll ever forget the scene of the children on the truck. It's forever there, seared into my brain with never an answer to the question, why? If you want to understand a little more the pure evil of the Nazis, if you want to mean it a little more when you say, never again, to shore up your outrage that for a time we all looked the other way, read this book.

the best long haul flight ever

Bought this book just before boarding a flight to Singapore via Dubai. The pages just turned and I couldn't put it down. A truly believable and amazing story of man's inhumanity to man in the name of religion. A story of dark days in a murky past, but with a twist not revealed until the final pages. An excellent read in all respects. Certainly made for a very short long haul flight.

Congratulations Ben Elton - what a fabulous storyline and even more poignant when you read of Elton's family connections with the war. Only very rarely are there some clunky 'conversational' sentences (particularly at the beginning) which jar slightly, but that is a minor quibble. This is a well written book, with a tight, believable plot and at times I felt 'transported' into the story. Lately, I have read some great books which have been let down by their ending. Not this one - one of those books where even though its midnight, I have to 'read just one more chapter'.

And then she gets dressed and said, ‘And this is for lying your ass off in the student union just so you could get me back in bed with you!’ And then the bitch just walks out the door! And so here I am, lying in bed naked and feeling relief that at least you’re going to be the one who finds me tied up here. Hey, can you get me untied already?

I felt something snap in me at that. I got up from my position with one hand on the bed, straightening up and I said, “I don’t think so.”
