This woman is nuts...
By Lola Brown
Before I read her book I never paid much attention to her. I thought she was at best boring and at worst irritating. I really struggled to get through this claptrap. All the negative comments in the other reviews are right on target. She writes like she is in some sort of trance (which I believe is actually the case) and her careful prose cannot conceal her self-centeredness, her hatred of Israel, her resentment of the USA, and other major problems. I am uncomfortable with her obsession with Arabs and Islam and Jordan. It is not balanced. She can't stop exclaiming over the dear, dear, Arabs who never do wrong--and the evil Jews who ruin everything they touch. When she mentions the prophet Muhammed she includes a prayer. The pendulum swings from one extreme to the other all the time: she claims to be extremely humble yet she is furious that certain people did not (do not) fall at her feet, her, the youngest Queen in the world at the time with her pretty Swedish looks! (Now propped up with plastic surgery, I see). She threatened to cut off all contact with her mother unless she relented and stopped calling her "Lisa." She complains of their "poverty" yet she lived (lives) in great comfort and Hussein bought whatever he wanted: boats, helicopters, planes, houses all over the world including England and the US. They gave each other rubies and emeralds and she wore designer clothes. Indeed, one of the more memorable newspaper headlines read "The King Goes Begging, the Queen goes shopping." (This was referring to Jordan's impoverished state and the fact that the king spends a great deal of time asking for money from the West, especially the US and Great Britain. Many feel that it is an illegitimate kingdom, in that it has been set up and is maintained (paid for) by the West in order to keep at least one pseudo-friendly power in the Middle East.) She vilifies every possible act of aggression by Israel and mentions little or nothing of what the Arab world has done. She claims that Western troops (i.e. mainly the US) brought in the "seeds of radical Islam" during the Iraq-Kuwaiti war) that led to world terrorism including the World Trade Center attack. Her hypnotic reverence for her husband is, again, beyond reason, but I think a major part of that is that he was her ticket to prominence and a certain amount of influence. Now, of course, that small amount of influence is completely lost, thank goodness. Her whole premise is built on lies and a skewed perception of history, for instance, she perpetuates the belief that Hagar's son (Ishmael) was Abraham's spiritual and blood heir. He was Abraham's son by his servant girl Hagar, but the rightful inheritance went to his legal son with his wife Sarah (Isaac). Was it fair? However one may feel about it, those are the facts, not the Arab/Islam fantasy world version. I don't take sides in the Arab-Israeli conflict but it doesn't get anyone anywhere to deny the truth. The only interesting point in the book (if it's true?) is that world leaders considered setting up a Jewish state in Argentina or Uganda before they chose Palestine.
An alternately boring and disturbing book. If she was younger she'd be running off to join ISIS--she gives me the creeps.

Leap of Faith
By Gladys Love
Leap of Faith is a thoroughly readable and enjoyable autobiography of Jordan's Queen Noor. I learned a lot from reading it and enjoyed the view it gave me of the Noor and the king. It was, however extremely biased in favor of the King. He could do and did no wrong from the Queen's point of view. Since the king was dead when she wrote the book I had hoped for a more balanced read. After reading it I knew that I had to read something more neutral to get a real view of the regime and the times in which Queen Noor was Queen. However, given Noor's position I suppose that I should have expected exactly what the book delivered.
