“What is it?”

“The lights are off.”

The kelp forest was dark.

“The lights are on the roof. They usually have them on for night parties,” said Marty. “I forgot they might be off. Tell you what we’ll do—we’ll call the control room and get them turned on. The surge machine, too.”

We walked down the stairs to the first floor, where there’s a little gallery in front of the kelp forest. Here the floor is carpeted, and there are a few stair-step benches where you can sit in case you become mesmerized and unable to move.


Marty left me and went to the information desk to use the phone. In a moment, the lights lit the tank, as if the house lights had gone up on a stage. A big gold garibaldi darted away, startled. A sea cucumber, spiny and, to tell you the truth, somewhat revolting, had pasted itself to the far wall. Leopard sharks glided by, and thin, black-tailed senoritas. A rockfish, looking baleful, flapped its pectoral fins like wings. I was staring back at it, wondering if it was trying to make friends (and knowing better), when the surge machine went on.

The kelp, twenty-eight feet tall, as impressive in its own way as a stand of redwoods, began to sway. Water swirled as if a wave had hit, which is what the surge simulates, and an object caught in the forest worked its way loose. It looked like a gray jacket, windbreaker-style, with a red splatter on it. Another foreign object floated gracefully toward the bottom—a woman’s high heel. Automatically, I looked up.

not smith's best work

I was so pleased by Julie Smith's first Rebecca Schwartz book, Death Turns a Trick (see my review), that I bought the rest of this five book series. Books two and three were still in line with the traditional cozy, i.e., no gratuitous sex or violence, but this book, Dead in the Water, number four of the Rebecca Schwartz books, ends with horrific scenes of violence. I don't think this is a spoiler, as I'm not giving away motive or perpetrator: Rebecca, her current boyfriend, and two ten-year-old girls are subjected to physical and psychological torture that will probably give them nightmares -- and daytime shivers, too -- for the rest of their lives. Yes, it's fiction, but if I want to read about the worst human behavior I would prefer to get it from great 19th century English and Russian novels.

I've already sent for the last book in this series, and I will read it. Perhaps it will give me a clue as to why Smith stopped writing about Rebecca and essentially downplays this character on her website. Julie Smith: why not have Rebecca come back older and wiser? You've put on a few years and gained more experience: give us back a decent protagonist with loving mother, father, sister, law partner; a steady boyfriend or husband; a good law practice; perhaps some nice courtroom scenes -- and no noir.

OK story, but lacking the wit and humour of the other Rebecca Schwartz novels

Four stars or three stars, I have had some difficulty in rating this book. On the one hand I really enjoy the novels about Rebecca Schwartz. She is still a likeable character, and the story is well written like the others. It starts off promisingly weird when an aquarium director is found dead, floating with the fish in the aquarium. I also appreciate that Rebecca's irritatingly doting parents are nowhere to be found in this story.
But, there is something lacking. The trademark wit and humour of the other novels is not at all as prominent in this story and I missed that.

What finally settled it at three stars was the roles of the children in this book. Rebecca is not used to children and her first lame attempts at connecting with them are rather entertaining. But then she suddenly has bonded with them so quickly that it really feels unrealistic. The biggest issue for me, however, is what later happens to the children in the story, I will not spoil it for a future reader by going into detail, but it made me feel rather uneasy and it took away the "feel good"-character of the other Rebecca Schwartz novels.

The cover led me to believe this was a cozy mystery. My mistake for not checking the classification of it before downloading. This story is actually rather dark and confusing. The main character Rebecca Schwartz seems indecisive, inconsistent and judgmental in many areas. A big fan of Julie Smith's Talba Wallis series, I think I'll go back and finish it rather than reading the darker Rebecca Schwartz series. Just personal preference.

This book was second hand but in great condition. To purchase a new one in Australia was almost double the price.
The book in itself it absolutely brilliant and is useful as an adjunct to my masters in oncology. I would highly recommend this book for any health professional training in oncology.
It arrived in good time and was packaged well.

Much to like, but ...

Georgiana Knight sets out to find documents and evidence to prove the marriage of her parents - this will make her brother Harry and her legitimate. Not to mention making Harry the Earl of Dunsmore. To infiltrate Dunsmore's estate, she is forced to accept the only employment she can find, that of valet to Lord Nathaniel Harland.
There follows the usual complication that arises with this type of masquerade, attraction between the two protagonists, the fraught thoughts of the hero wondering about the attraction, the discovery, the build-up of sexual tension through the enforced intimacy ...
Not badly done ... but ...
Several large problems trouble this story, chiefly the atmosphere. Georgy and her thoughts are just not believable for the period. She is far too current. Some of the dialogue particularly underlines the modernity. The story is not overly of the wallpaperish kind, but it is not convincing enough to prevent the reader from being continually being drawn out of the tale.
I liked Nathan much more than Georgy. Alas, Georgy is a snob. She is continually flogging Nathan with his artistocratic birth and holding it against him when she attacks him.
Story is full of action, the underlying premise is good, but ...

A Lovely and Exciting Story

I discovered this book upon a recommendation from Courtney Milan. I was really impressed by Ms. Chambers' debut. Her writing is lovely and her characters very likable. I was drawn into the story and will certainly be reading more by this author in the future.

God, I loved this book. a MUST read. PERFECTION

Perfection. I kinda feel like being naughty and leaving this review with just this single word. Frankly, there is little to add. I can tell you how amazing the story was, how much I enjoyed the characters and mostly the relationship buildup. How great the whole "time and place" was for me even though I don't read Historical that often. Yeah, I could also tell you how intrigued I was by the whole plot line and everything that happened and how I imagined it would play and the fact it didn't play as I thought it would.. I could tell you all that but it simply WON'T express just how much I enjoyed it and how much you HAVE to grab it and read it. I tell you now Joanna can write about apes and chickens populating the moon and I'd happily read it!

So, let's write a few words on the plot, shall we?

Ever since their mother died a few years back, Georgy and her brother Harry are on a mission looking for a document, ANY document that shows their parents were married, meaning they are not the illegitimate kids of Lord Dunsmore and his actress "mistress", no, they are so legitimate Harry is actually the rightful heir!

No matter how insistent Harry is he finds nothing. Yet Lilly, Georgy's best friend, has an interesting idea! She heard that Lord Nathan Harland will be attending Christmas festivities at the the Dunsmore manner (the best place to look for the information the Dunsmores are SURELY working hard to conceal), and not only that, he is looking for a valet!

Since Harry has already tried talking to the Dunsmores it would be stupid for him to appear (even as a valet) on their manner so Georgy decides she would impersonate a young man and work for Nathan Harland.

I loved the beginning and the possibilities I saw in it. Since this story is told from both Nathan and Georgy's POV it was great seeing the story line from both their views, learning what they came to appreciate in one another first as employer and employee and later on when truths starts to unravel how they fall for one another. With everything around them it felt as though it was Georgy and Nathan falling in love. It wasn't about Nathan's title or his ability to maybe help her out (or stop her..), it wasn't about Georgy doing her absolute best to "raid" the Dunsmores. It was truly and firstly about them. They fell in love like "any" man and woman and the plot around them was a sort of a bonus.

Even though the timing story of this story is the early 1800s Georgy felt so brave and maybe even a sort of a feminist. She was different, which is part of what Nathan found so appealing in her. She was "just" a woman yet she was smart and canning but also fragile, sensitive and sometimes shy and insecure. She was just perfect because she felt so genuine and real. She mad mistakes, she trusted and got hurt, she tried to keep herself at bay but fell for Nathan anyway and in a way he was the same. He tried to "arm" himself with fashionable clothes and a cold manner but inside he was always in a fierce need for someone JUST like her and she was peeling his layer one by one.

I'll stop here because now that I started writing past the word Perfection I seem to be almost unable to stop! But I will! I'll just say that I'm Joanna's fan and I'll read ANYTHING she publish. I have two more books by her scheduled for the ending of the year, both Historicals, and yet I just found out yesterday she will be a part of a Contemporary MM Romance Anthology "Wish Come True" - YAY!

God, I loved this book. a MUST read.

Comprehensive but exceedingly hard to deal with

To preface - I hold an advanced degree in Math.

I bought this book mainly for External Ballistics - instead of McCoy's classic because of the negative reviews (errors) in the latter. I found the External Ballistics chapters almost impossible to read, with drawings looking like mockery of those in McCoy's book. And Dr. Carlucci's book has its own fair share of errors - 6 or so pages of errors.

Frustrated, I put this book on the shelf to be a reference in Internal and Terminal Ballistics if/when I need it, bit the bullet and bought the "real McCoy". What a relief! Robert McCoy's book reads really well (at least in my humble opinion)! Yes it has 20 PAGES of errata. Fine, I've printed those out and added to the book. Small price for usability.

Currently (as all I need now is external ballistics calculations) I use "the real McCoy".

Ballistics

Have been a life long student of guns and ballistics. This book is definitely for the person who has a math and technical background. The flight of a bullet is a very complicated problem which this book fully explores. Anyone who is a serious shooter should make some effort to understand the dynamics of a bullet in flight. Don't expect an easy read. This book has to be studied.

Not as useful as I thought it would be

There is no index--so there is no way of easily finding out HOW to do something. For example: I wanted to see how to use the built-in intervalometer. I couldn't look that up.

A waste

Almost useless. Poorly organized and almost impossible to follow. There is no index, the table of contents is inadequate, and since there are no page numbers in the book, it is almost impossible to find an entry anyway. Save your money.

A must have for em5 Mark 2 owners.

Just the book I needed. The book takes some work, but it's not because the book is hard, it's because the Olympus menu system is very detailed. Think Photoshop.

David, in addition to being an author, is a pro photographer, YouTuber, and blogger. Beware! If you follow him you might be struck with the irresistible urge to buy an MFT camera. I was. I now own an em5 Mark 2.

Archetypal splitting

This is an amazing collection of letters which depict the relationship of two of the greatest psychologists of all time. Naturally, there are people who interpret this relationship in different ways, especially as a very specific situation, peculiar to the development of psychology or otherwise. I think otherwise. Life is rarely linear--it's usually Normally Distributed. Things tend to go in cycles, not straight lines. The relationship between Freud the mentor & Jung the mentee is just not that unusual. In fact, it parallels that of every child (especially males stereotypically seeking independence). There comes a time to leave the nest & for the mentee to strike out on his own--just as there is a time for a new paradigm (per Thomas Kuhn's classic, "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions"). This is precisely what occurred between Freud & Jung. It's almost archetypal. There's even something of a parallel between Jung & Father Victor White in Jung's "Letters." This book has some interesting quotes from each of the two psychologists:

By Freud:

p. 119 Take my urgent advice, arm yourself with ill temper against all unreasonable demands.

p. 121 One must try to learn something from every experience.

p. 169 I have long known that one can't change people. Everyone has something worthwhile in him. We must content ourselves with getting it out of him.

By Jung:

p. 84 What people don't know surpasses the imagination, and what they don't want to know is simply unbelievable.

p. 157 one likes human beings around one and not complex-masks.

And, very apropos: p. 462 Emma Jung: it is always the nearest thing that one sees worst.

LETTERS BETWEEN THE TWO FIGURES OVER THEIR ENTIRE HISTORY

C.G. Jung was once thought of as Freud's chief disciple. These letters cover the period of 1906 (when Jung sent Freud his Studies in Word Association) until their final "break" in 1914. (There is one additional letter from Jung to Freud from 1923, when Jung was referring a patient to Freud for treatment.)

Here are some representative excerpts:

SF: "The leading lights' of psychiatry really don't amount to much; the future belongs to us and our views, and the younger men---everywhere most likely---side actively with us." (1907)
SF: "I regard (for the present) the role of sexual complexes in hysteria merely as a theoretical necessity and do not infer it from their frequency and intensity. Proof, I believe, is not yet possible." (1907)
CG: "(L)ike Herakles of old, you are a human hero and demi-god, wherefore your dicta unfortunately carry with them a semipiternal value. All the weaker ones who come after you must of necessity adopt your nomenclature, originally intended to fit a specific case." (1909)
SF: "It has occurred to me that the ultimate basis of man's need for religion is infantile helplessness, which is so much greater in man than in animals. After infancy he cannot conceive of a world without parents and makes for himself a just God and a kindly nature, the two worst anthropomorphic falsifications he could have imagined." (1910)
SF: "You mustn't suppose that I ever 'lost patience' with you; I don't believe these words can apply to our relationship in any way. In all the difficulties that confront us in our work we must stand firmly together, and now and then you must listen to me, your older friend, even when you are disinclined to." (1910)
CJ: "My evenings are taken up very largely with astrology. I make horoscopic calculations in order to find a clue to the core of psychological truth." (1911)
CJ: "If you doubt my word, so much the worse for you. I would, however, point out that your technique of treating your pupils like patients is a blunder. In that way you produce either slavish sons of impudent puppies..." (1912)
SF: "I propose that we abandon our personal relations entirely. I shall lose nothing by it, for my only emotional tie with you has long been a thin thread---the lingering effect of past disappointments---and you have everything to gain, in view of the remark you recently made in Munich..." (1913)

About the Author
Chuck Williams is Dean of the College of Business at Butler University. Dr. Williams previously served as Dean of the Eberhardt School of Business at the University of the Pacific and as Associate Professor of Management at the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University. Dr. Williams has also served as Associate Dean and Chair of Management and has taught at Michigan State University and Oklahoma State University. Dr. Williams received his B.A. in psychology from Valparaiso University. He specialized in organizational behavior, human resources, and strategic management while earning his M.B.A and Ph.D. in business administration from Michigan State University. His research interests include employee recruitment and turnover, performance appraisal, and employee training and goal setting. Dr. Williams has published research in the JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, the ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT, HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT REVIEW, PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY, and the ORGANIZATIONAL RESEARCH METHODS JOURNAL. He was a member of the JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT's editorial board and currently serves as a reviewer for numerous other academic journals. Insightful and easy to follow.

This is my 4th, maybe 5th? book. I did one every year for a while and would look back just to see how I'd evolved. This journal does an excellent job of allowing me to get out of my head and relax into more awareness of myself. It offers practical tips for relaxation and self discovery. It is challenging in the most gentle and beautiful way.

One of the better ones I think

This is basically a spriritual workbook/journal. It's not just a blank book, but an actual guided workbook that asks you questions and gives you exercises. This would be a great journal to bring with you on a 40 day meditation or yoga retreat (if you can afford to go off and leave work for that long)... but a book like this is also very good for people who can't get away from work for that long and yet still want to take a 40 day retreat without turning into a monk for 40 days and leaving their lives completely. It asks you to take 15 minutes a day at least for the next 40 days to be alone with yourself, without any other distractions and just be with yourself rather than be the "you" that your family and everyone else expects you to be- which more times than not is so convincing we often start to believe that we really are that person they expect, when in reality that is just a shell that your family and environment has molded over the real you. The author mentions many different religions in the beginning of the book, but it's obvious in the writing that she feels the strongest connection with Judaism. Those who are Jewish or feel a connection to it in some way may appreciate this however people of other faiths are definitely not excluded.
