Make You Burn (The Deacons of Bourbon Street), by Megan Crane

Meet the Deacons of Bourbon Street, bad boy bikers who are hell on wheels—and heaven between the sheets. Megan Crane revs up an irresistible new series co-written with Rachael Johns, Jackie Ashenden, and Maisey Yates.

Sean “Ajax” Harding’s oaths are inked into his skin. Once second-in-command of the Deacons of Bourbon Street motorcycle club, he left New Orleans to protect the brotherhood, and only the death of his beloved mentor, Priest Lombard, could lure him back. Walking into the old hangout gives him a familiar thrill—especially when he gets an eyeful of the bar’s delectable new owner. A wild ride with her is just the welcome Ajax needs. Then he realizes that she’s Priest’s daughter, all grown up and totally off limits.

Sophie Lombard loved her father, not his lifestyle. She’s done with bikers . . . until Ajax roars into town—arrogant, tough, and sexy as ever. And although he treats her like the Catholic schoolgirl he once knew, Sophie’s daydreams tend to revolve around sin. With the very real possibility of heartbreak looming, Sophie knows better than to get too close to an outlaw. But every touch from Ajax is steamier than the Louisiana bayou—and heat like this may just be worth getting burned.

Started great, then nothing......

I'm the Dirty Girl Guru of All Things Biker (yes, they actually gave me that title still waiting for my t-shirt). When I got this ARC, I was all excited. When I started reading, the excitement just ratcheted up. I loved Sophie and how she was holding on by the skin of her teeth through the hardship cast upon her and I loved the absolute alpha maleness of Ajax. It was looking like this was going to be an MC book right up my alley with potential for lots of grit, a mystery, a biker war in the making, and 4 hot alpha tattooed bikers to drool over as the story unfolded itself. The writing was so descriptive you could almost feel the heaviness of the New Orleans air as the characters breathed it in, and the sex scenes were over the freaking top hot. No gentle lovemaking to be found in this book, it was hard, fast, dirty and raw. I settled in for what I thought was going to be one awesome MC romance high. Alas, I was destined for one heck of a letdown as I realized that I was reading one hot and sexy book with characters I could get behind but no freaking meat to it.

Sophie has the potential to be one heck of an h. Seriously if this book had panned out she would have been up there as a favorite of mine. The book opens with Sophie cruising through the streets of New Orleans in nothing but stripper heels, gold sparkly hot pants, and tassel pasties. The reason why? Her Dad, the President of the Deacon's of Bourbon Street had been killed in a motorcycle crash the night before and she was mad at him. Her Daddy had told her that she could dress up like a drag queen and wander the streets of the French Quarter over his dead body, so she paraded through the French Quarter like that as a one fingered salute to her Daddy for daring to die on her. As screwed up as that is on all levels, that's the kind of behavior I love in a h. Sophie was raised in the biker world, understood it even as she was kept apart from it because of her gender. I loved her strength, even when she was close to her danger zone of falling completely apart. I loved her take no crap attitude and her fearlessness.

Ajax was a prime alphahole. He was a come in, take charge, and take over kind of guy. But under all that rough, tough exterior if you looked really hard you could see the man underneath who cared about his club and cared about Sophie. He spoke not with words but with actions and he got his point across. In fact he probably should have kept his mouth shut more often since a lot of times when he opened it, I wanted to separate him from his dangly bits since he definitely owned jerk label.

The problem was this book had questions galore: What happened on that road where Priest died; Why did he exile his four trusted officers 10 years before? Why did he let the MC decline? What's the deal with the will and his decision on who got what? What about all those Deacons that defected? What's the deal with Cash and Prince? I swear it's like the author plotted out a great book then decided "Eh, never mind. It's too much work to hash this thing out, I'll just write hot sex scenes and hopefully my readers won't notice I forgot to write the rest of the book". Seriously, the only thing decided at the end of the book was that Sophie and Ajax were together. There was this weird epilogue where you're told that they had a year of fighting and making up but not one explanation as to what happened with the club, the property (other than it's obviously still there and the bar is running), the war or who killed Priest? Nothing. You could almost hear my poor Ipad pleading for it's life "please, please don't throw me!"

So you have a book with no substance, too much sex (although they are definitely nice sex scenes), unexpected POV changes, not enough dialogue, and too much introspection but I really liked the characters and wish they had a book worthy of them. As mad as I am, I want to know the answers to the questions that went unanswered. The fact that the next 3 books in the series will be written by three different authors kind of intrigues me where usually it would have me saying "No thanks, that's a train wreck waiting to happen". Why? Because I'm hoping the next author will write a book that actually is a complete book with answers to these unanswered questions (along with all that hot, raw sex).

Spice's completely mad rating: 2 Stars

Is that on the menu?
By Rosa Sharon
This was my first Megan Crane read and I was impressed. Yes, I've read a few of the negative reviews. But I am a lover of biker books. I read lots of them. This book opened a lot of doors that I believe will be explored in later books. It had to set the scene and paint a picture.
I loved Sophie, she is an unapologetic biker who does not back down to anyone, exactly the kind of woman Ajax needs to get his attention. Being attractive, muscled, and tattooed, he gets more than his share of willing women: until he sees her. By the time he discovers that the voluptuous beauty he has been yearning for is the daughter of his MC President, it's too late. The chemistry between them is off the charts. He is so alpha, so bossy and forceful that you can tell that NOBODY refuses to do what he tells them, everyone except her. She doesn't back down. She pushes back and it turns him on even more.

I enjoyed the alternating POV and being inside the heads of the characters. It helped me to understand their thoughts versus their actions. With both of them being so fierce they had maintain their attitude and show no weakness. However we are able to see she is breaking down in tears that she never shows him. We get to know that he is struggling with his duty to the club versus his desire to comfort her. We know that he has plans for the floundering club and that he has suspicions regarding some past events.
Another thing that I enjoyed was the voice of Sophie's father as she remembers the wisdom that he shared with her throughout the years. Being raised in the MC lifestyle she grew up knowing the rules. She knew to make her point in private and not in public, and that "a man is what he does." She knows that 'club business' is not for her to know. She has accepted that "Bikers are bikers. They're going to do what they're going to do."

Yes, there are a lot of unanswered questions. But the open-ended details are not about the couple, they are about the 'club business'. So, in conclusion, I'm looking forward to more Deacons of Bourbon Street MC. There is a lot of work to be done to pull everything together and it's gonna be a wild ride.

great idea for a new series
By B.E. Love
I Love a good MC book and I have read tons of them and though this one has some of the same aspects this book felt very different that most books. Megan Cranes writing style is very different and unique, you would almost think she is writing a great literate piece of work but about a MC romance(as crazy as that sounds). This book is gritty and raw and beautiful in it's romance and heartbreak. In short this book was refreshing and different.

Ajax was the VP now that the president is dead Ajax is back and even though it has been ten long years he wouldn't rather be any place. When Ajax see's Sophie he wants her instantly, then he finds out she is Priest's daughter and Ajax knows that she is off limits. Sophie grew up in the MC but was always on the outside of the MC, her father was the president and the MC was his life now that he is gone Sophie is confronted with Ajax the VP who left. Neither can deny the attraction but the death of her father overshadows her feels.

As they prepare to put Sophie's father to rest the feelings they try so hard to resist become to difficult to deny and they not only find comfort in each other arms but a passion neither knew could exist. Ajax came home to a MC in shambles and he sets out to put it back together again, and while doing that the pieces of Priest's death don't seem to add up. As the new future of the MC begins to come together Sophie is given a blow she isn't sure she can come back from but Ajax has made up his mind that Sophie is his and he will gladly do whatever it takes to keep her.

I was really excited about this book when I read the books description and this book didn't disappoint. This book had so many different elements to it, that just created a great book. Ajax is rough and tough around the edges and is happy staying that way but he quickly falls head over heels in love with Sophie and though he will always have the MC in his blood Sophie quickly takes over his heart. Ajax is possessive and demanding and a great hero who drives Sophie crazy but is just what she needs. Sophie not only has to deal with the loss of her dad but the new future that unfolds now that her father no longer runs the MC and at the same time deal with unresolved issues with her dad. Sophie is strong and tough and loving and broken, she's a great heroine who grows a lot in this book and learns so much about herself.

What really surprised me was how much I liked Priest Sophie's dad. Even though he is dead at the beginning of this book he felt like a huge part of this book and he was so real and important through out this book. I will say that there is a lot and I mean a lot left unresolved in this book, but I am guessing that is because the story will continue to unfold and progress with the books yet to come because there is no way the story could be considered finished. The main issues are yet to be resolved and the issues with the other MC members are yet to be finished. I think this series will be great there is so much left to happen that I know this will be a great series. The MC members have so much they each have to deal with I can't wait to read their books and see how it all ends.
