Breaking the Chains: Overcoming the Spiritual Abuse of a False Gospel, by Shari Howerton

Shari Howerton was born and raised in Southern California. Her worldview was formed inside a tightly knit religious community, by the one pastor she had known from birth. In 1993, she and hundreds of others sold their homes in California and followed their pastor to Tennessee. In 2003, Shari left the church and soon thereafter found hope in a new life with her husband, John, and church family at World Outreach Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In Breaking the Chains, Shari chronicles her life and the lives of others who were subject to control and abuse. She illustrates the profound challenges of leaving close friends and breaking free from a lifetime of harmful conditioning to find joy, hope and freedom in the cross of Jesus Christ.

Hard Truth, Compassionately Spoken
By J. Limbaugh
Having experienced my own battles with the group Shari Howerton was involved in (not as a member, but as an outlying associate seeking to gain knowledge and debate the issues), I'd fully expected her book to be a run-down of their doctrines, why she now believes them to be wrong, and how God brought all this to light in her life. I had not expected a caustic tone, but I did expect a kind of "quick and dirty" or "hard and fast" corrective and warning against her former group. I'd expected my own frustrations with this movement to be legitimized and clarified.

This book is really nothing of the sort. It does not carry the spirit of correction (although erroneous beliefs and misguided actions are addressed head-on). Neither did it offer much fuel for the fire in regard to my own personal (and arrogant) agenda. This book is not a tabloid "tell-all." It is a very personal, emotional, heart-felt, and moving autobiography. There is no stinging critique. There is no axe to grind. Honesty abounds, but never for the sake of vindicating the author or setting anyone straight. There is a humility in this story that succeeds tremendously in offsetting the author's own wounds and path to healing. This lends her a tremendous amount of credibility when she does find it necessary to take up arms or question her past and those involved in it. The vulnerability she expresses in these pages is so palpable, only the most cynical and fault-finding reader could accuse her of being motivated by bitterness.

Far more than being about the specific beliefs of her former church, Howerton addresses the deeper symptoms of cult life: mind control, fear, insular relationships, and placing confidence in man above (and sometimes to the exclusion) of God. As a result, the book crosses all kinds of lines and barriers that similar books usually don't - an opportunity that surely would have been missed had the author been too self-focused. This book is for ANYONE who has ever been involved in a church that preaches false doctrine, exercises authoritarianism, or is simply legalistic to the core. It is also for anyone who has never come within a country mile of a cult, but needs hope for healing on a strictly personal level. This is because the author's penchant for self-exposure and her story of healing is altogether about JESUS CHRIST and what HE can do, not false doctrines, personal rage, or the need to get even. I came to the book looking for an expose' of sorts. By the end, I'd almost forgotten about Christian Gospel Temple (the author's former fellowship). Instead, I found myself staring into so many mirrors that exposed my own need.

"Breaking the Chains" is not for the faint of heart. It is never graphic or salacious. At the same time, the author's own pain, confusion, and joy shine through so brightly that you'll vicariously experience those same emotions with her. This makes for a sometimes uncomfortable read, but also one that elevates, inspires, and induces hope.

Redemption
By J. Wallace
There are many lessons to be learned in this engaging book of redemption. For starters our hearts are little "idol factories" whether it is music, people, money you name it and our hearts will make it an idol. When God regenerates us he restores His rightful place on the throne in our life. He is the only one worthy to be worshipped. Second lesson is you don't have to have been raised in a cult to be in bondage, we are all born in bondage to sin. By God's great mercy we can be born again and set free if we repent and trust in Christ alone. I am so thankful for this book and I pray that God will use it for His glory.

Book gives glimpse into life under thumb of a controlling church
By Provender
If you ever wondered why people stay in cults, this book gives a clear, readable explanation. Her story details a life molded and constricted by the sometimes arbitrary rules of a church that exercised control beyond what most Christians have ever experienced.
Howerton's story is detailed and gripping. Because she was born into this cultish church, you will not learn much about the way such groups lure people in the first place, but you will see the mechanisms in place for keeping them captive once they belong. The intertwined relationships of family members, elitist doctrines and inculcated fears are clearly depicted.
In reading Breaking the Chains, you see one woman's struggle to stay obedient, to follow the dictates of leaders, to conform to the expectations of the group while also fighting to maintain her personal identity. You follow the development of her mind and her search for truth and see her finally reach a point where she can break free from the bonds that held her life for decades.
It is sometimes hard to keep different individuals straight, especially toward the end, but it really makes no difference. The image of the church is a monolith and members work together as one to preserve the image at all costs.
Church leaders covered up pedophilia and sexual abuse, exerted pressure on members and their families, controlled through manipulative techniques very personal parts of members' lives and caused much pain and anguish. Members could not see that there was anything wrong with the controlling nature of the church and ostracized those who raised questions.
The role of the Internet in helping Howerton affirm her choice to break free from the group is made clear. Postings on message boards allowed former members to find each other and compare notes, resulting in a sense of wholeness and release.
This story is one of victory over a system that reached into very intimate and personal areas of the lives of individuals. It shows that courage and determination, alongside a growing faith in Christ, were able to push back the forces of darkness in this believer's life.
Often self-published books are riddled with diction or mechanical problems, but this book was written with an easy, professional grace and execution. It was hard to put down.
This is a story of a true overcomer that ends in freedom and victory, Breaking the Chains should go on the top of your reading list. - Provender
