The Review:

The infamous Daniel Waters has written another paranormal masterpiece. Break My Heart 1,000 Times is filled with thrills, chills, and a large paranormal presence, that it will leave readers transfixed. Seeing the dead is a part of life, and since the "Event," the aftermath has continued. Ghosts were not an abnormal part of life anymore, it was now a part of the norm. Even in Veronica's household, her father's ghost is a constant reminder of how life was now. Sickness and lingering death, environmental damage, and chaos were the result of the horrific "Event."

Mr. Bittner, one of Veronica's high school teachers had lost his daughter, Eva. A ghost named Mary Greer, a remembrance of Bittner's daughter, was killed in February, eight years ago. Mary had been one of the first ghosts to make regular appearances, immediately after the "Event." Mary had appeared to Mr. Bittner before her death, and led to allegations of her murder. Every teen at Montcrief high school had accused Mr. Bittner as Mary's killer, and only a poem that someone mysteriously left on his desk, was the proof of his innocence. Veronica and Kirk take it upon themselves to investigate, and in doing so has uncovered an unimaginably dark and dire plot.

Ever since the "Event," Veronica Calder stopped fearing ghosts. For Veronica, the ghosts were irritating results of the "Event." The most disturbing thing for Veronica was knowing that like her father, people she knew were gone, and they were not. Everything that has been thrown Veronica's way adds to her character, her personality, and her strength.

Kirk Lane is haunted by many things. For forgetting the anniversary of the "Event," for not telling Veronica that he likes her, and for wanting to push all ghost-related things out of his life. Kirk represented a certain type of strength, of acceptance, and of a person who wanted to move on, past the "Event." Mr. Bittner, to me represented the sorrow in the world. To me, he was the percentage of the population that couldn't accept and move on. He was stuck, with his nagging wife, searching for his daughter, and constantly seeing reminders of who was missing. Janine represented the other percentage of the population that just couldn't accept, period. Fear ruled her life, as well as never allowing herself any strength.

Waters world is amazing. From the "Event" to the ghosts, he spares no expense at the detail of this world. The history of how it all came about was interesting, to say the least. I feared for my dreams each time a ghost would appear in the story. There were definitely goose bumps that crawled up my skin, and I loved every minute of it.

Like Waters' previous works, his writing is superb. There is a shift in tone when the point of view moves from character to character. Each voice has a definitive personality, reflective of the characters' persona. Even when talking about a ghost, there's a definite chill factor that I experienced, and as a reader, that is wonderful writing skills. Break My Heart 1,000 Times has a perfect pacing to match the theme and tone of the story, slowing down when need be, but always and consistently moving at a constant pace.

Break My Heart 1,000 Times is a great paranormal story, with many promises of psych serial thrills. Throw out your expectations, and live in the moment. But don't wait too long to pick this up. Like Waters says, "Life is short, and death is forever."

P.S. Break My Heart 1,000 Times will be a movie. I cannot wait, especially after reading the amazing story!

FTC Advisory: Hyperion provided me with a copy of Break My Heart 1,000 Times. No goody bags, sponsorships, "material connections," or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Chapter by Chapter's review of Break My Heart 1,000 Times
By MaryAnn
How would I classify Break My Heart 1,000 Times by Daniel Waters? A morbidly dark Dystopian type read. After what is called as the "Event", ghosts are popping up everywhere. Ghosts of loved one, ghosts of people from the past...even ghosts of those who have been murdered. The event annihilated millions of people, leaving in its wake, those who now have to live day to day with daily ghostly encounters.

The way in which Break My Heart 1,000 Times opens up, you think that you are watching the everyday morning routine of a regular family, primarily Veronica's family. But to my surprise, the everyday routine of your father sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper and drinking from his cup of coffee, is one that is being repeated daily by the ghost of said father. I admit that after reading that, I was left with some chills. Not only do we witness her watch her father relive the same moment over and over again, we are also introduced to a ghost that has newly appeared in Veronica's home. A ghost named Brian, who plays a major role in the events in Break My Heart 1,000 Times.

Where most everyone who has been affected by the "Event" is, more or less, going through their daily motions...surviving another day amongst these ghosts, Veronica is more alive than the rest. But despite her lust for life, there are those who seek to snuff her candle out because of their own hidden agenda. Enter super creepy teacher, Mr. August Bittner. Having lost his daughter, post "Event", Mr. Bittner is lead to believe that the only way for him to be able to have his daughter, Eva, back he must take a life...on February 29... every leap year, believing that the veil between our world and the world beyond is most thinnest on February 29.

Sadly, poor Veronica's birthday is February 29 (a leap year baby), and so Mr. Bittner is convinced that Veronica is the key to getting his daughter back, and he will stop at nothing to make it happen...even murder... And perhaps with the help of Veronica's friend Kirk and her ghostly friend, Brian, Veronica may live to see another day...

The chapters are extremely short, and jump from the point of views of Veronica, Kirk, and Brian the ghost. You would think that it would get confusing, but not at all. In fact, it made the book even that more interesting and addictive. I was always curious to see how long I had to be in this individuals head before I was thrust into a different mind.

I will tell you right now, this book creeped me the funk out at times! Mr. Bittner is one hard core villain that I would never, EVER, want to cross paths with. You know in movies, you are usually safe if you are with someone else (pairs and groups are safe people!)? Yah, it didn't seem to matter that Veronica was with Kirk, and how safe they felt with each other's company, that darn Mr. Bittner seems to find his way to try and get to Veronica! Seriously, he is one messed up teacher. He reminded me of that creepy murdere Mr. What's His Face in the Lovely Bones?

Author, Daniel Waters, weaves a creepy, addictive tale where ghosts are an everyday reality and that even the tiniest spark of hope where a lost loved one could have a chance to come back causes one to go to the dark side...or cause one to re-visit the dark side every four years. A perfect late at night read, Break My Heart 1,000 Times absolutely had me jumping at little sounds in the middle of the night, and looking over my shoulder for ... who knows what!

Spooky, thrilling, suspenseful and, at times, heartrending
By SunshineRose
Ever since the Event, ghosts have appeared all over town. People have gotten used to seeing them go about their daily business and then disappear. Veronica agrees to join Kirk, her boyfriend, on a ghost hunt to see if they can determine ghost patterns. Daily, they go around town filming ghosts from those reenacting a typical daily scenario like mowing a lawn with an invisible lawnmower, to those reenacting their own deaths. Those types of ghosts creep Ronnie out, but she enjoys spending time with Kirk and learning more about this phenomenon.

History teacher August Bittner isn’t happy Ronnie and Kirk are spending time together, learning about ghosts and their habits. He fears they will discover his secret about Mary, the ghost who knocks on his door every day. Obsessed with his 16-year-old daughter Eva’s death on a leap year, and haunted by the ghost of his wife who’d committed suicide over it, he believes killing a girl the same age as Eva will bring her back to life. Soon it will be February 29th, and he knows Ronnie is the key to bringing Eva back to him forever. She will become his daughter. He will do anything to have Eva back. Anything.

Brian committed suicide in Ronnie’s house when Bittner strangled his girlfriend Mary. It has been years since her murder, but something has brought him back to the land of the living. He will do anything to make sure Bittner doesn’t gain another daughter. Anything.

Woven around the voices of Brian, Ronnie, Kirk and August, “Break my heart” is a spooky, thrilling, suspenseful and, at times, heartrending read that will leave students aged 12-18 gasping for breath eagerly turning pages. It may keep you up at night.
